The best way is to use 3.02. 3.03 adds a couple of new crashes and messes up animations, but doesn't include any fixes. Believe me

I've played two SP games with 3.03 and it's not that bad.

Plus I can't downgrade because of Steam so obviously my vote is for 3.03!

I really liked Steam for Half-Life and friends, and I didn't want to wait to buy BtS in the store. I didn't know it would prevent me from deciding what patch I want to use. All in all I think it's an ok program.

...now who releases patches that "add a couple of new crashes and mess up animations"?!?

I'm interested, if it's not too late. All 3.03 upgraded.

Gamespy made me do it when I tried playing a multiplayer game a few days ago -- have to use the latest patch there.

You can tell Steam not to apply the patches, but if you install the game from scratch it overrides this setting and patches up to the most recent version. Something I assume they'll fix in the near future.
