    • I'm going to change my vote on sea level back to low. Deity makes a good point.

I have AIM now. I think my ID is visible if you hover over it with the mouse. You can share it with anyone.

Has anyone other than cyber decided whether they want me to play?

Also, what setting is everyone voting Random: yes, on?

      Map: Terra
      Size: Huge
      Climate: Temperate
      Sea Level: Low
      Era: Ancient
      Speed: Marathon
      World Wrap: Cylindrical

                • In defense Ozzy, had I continued to play the Russians for another 25 turns, the Incans would have been destroyed. Deity wouldn't have been able to tech with the Inca to astronomy early, and the new world would have been split up much more than it was.

Deity got to the new world because certain players allowed him to (and I switched sides at a key moment and reformed the incan civ).

As it stands, even with a huge map, 3-4 civs stand to start in the tundra. We're not just talking about close quarters (land power versus sea power), we're talking about being denied a base for your civ, the ability to put down cottage squares and tech/grow.

Vote however you want on balanced, but if you're going to ask someone to stick in a game for 20 sessions, you owe him a some cities that aren't clinging to glaciers. You'll note that the history books don't mention the exploits of anicent native canadians, or the populous empire of sibiera. Diplo games are about clashes between great empires, not reindeer hearders.

                  • Ok, I'll compromise and change jungle to 'NO' as well.
Since we're still with 14 players sealevel must stay low imho. If in any case the number of players drops to 12 before gamestart I'm fine with 'normal'.

Deity: in my 'tracking folder' of my pm's it says that your pm's haven't been read for weeks. Neither does it say that you're getting a notification. Maybe something is wrong. I'll update your settings later.

                        Comment

                        • Well, with Raz out and Colonel in, we're still standing at 13 (14 with omni if he confirms...)

                          1. As for land area and such. A normal Huge map has 11 players. But Terra maps are extra large (bigger than other huge maps). If you add those two together you will get roughly enough room for 13-14 players. This is why I vote for a normal sea level map.

                          2. In addition, low sea maps seem to create a more landfriendly continent, by that I mean fewer bays and peninsulas, discouraging naval power, and I am a big fan of boats.

                          3. Furthermore, the viking special building gives +1 movement to ships built in that city, but that will be a waste if I wont have any use for boats. Which is a third reason why I want to stick with the Normal sea level setting, so that noone has any extra benefits or disadvantages because of map type. Some civs are better as sea-powers and some are better as land powers (due to UU's, traits, UB's etc). Anything but normal setting changes the "standard calculation", making certain wonders less worth (lighthouse, colossus) than they would be if there was a normal amount of water.

And then I have a slight concern regarding a statement made by Frank.

had I continued to play the Russians for another 25 turns, the Incans would have been destroyed.
Is this what we have to expect from you? Wiping out other civs? (despite the fact that we have stated that is bad form?) In general what I have seen, and heard, about your playstyle and your behaviour towards Ras gives me reason for concern. Surprise attack warrior rushes, borderline harassing another player because he has different views than you, designing to wipe out!? another civ because it is weaker...

This is exactly what regular MP games are about and the exact reason for why I want to play diplogames, to get a different experience. I play to win as well, but not by bluntly ignoring the values of the game or even the basic art of diplomacy, which is what this particular gamestyle is about.

You do know that surprise attacks and annhiliation of other civs is considered very bad form in diplogames? If you dont, I suggest you check them out again. If you do know, but choose to disregard it because you would rather win than adhere to the diplogame honor code, I for one would like an explanation for why I should play a diplogame with you.

                            • I'll take another look at some low and normal sea level maps. Since it apparantly means much to LzPrst I'm willing to re-concider.

Toni: I've changed your vote, I'm sorry.

LzPrst, Let's not focus too much on one line of Frank. He played very diplo in HOTW5. Besides that, everybody knows that if he would've walked too much in Incan territory all nations of the world would have intervened. You need much diplo power to be able to eliminate another civ, not only strenth of arms.
With 14 players you need even more diplo powers. Taking 1 city, maybe 2 cities: possible. More then 3 cities, the whole fun of politic debates start Can't wait

                              • I've studied both 'low sealevel' and 'normal sealevel' and think that there aren't much differences in the size of the landmass. What LzPrst says is true though, mediam sealevel has more islands and bays, etc.

Both version also had now and then really close starting positions between two civs. I still think that civs shouldn't see each other immediately when they start. (ie. their first city fat crosses shouldn't overlap) (unless of course one of them moved their settler before they founded their city). For sure because it seems like there's enough land on a huge Terramap.

I've changed my vote to normal/medium sealevel.
