  • Hope we can get a game going tonight, I'm getting kinda annoyed with the type of games I'll have with random people on the internet.

Last game was a simple Pangaea, six players, usual MP settings... within 20 minutes three players had dropped out including the host (Got to wonder what is the ****ing point when the person hosting the game spends more time in the lobby than in the game itself). A close Neighbour tried to capture my capital in the first few turns, but I stopped him, but where would the fun in just destroying one of the players straight off be? After a little while someone came in to take over from one of those who'd dropped out, left almost immediately and then rejoined as the strongest nation. My participation ended after he spent about 20 turns letting the timer run out every time, just so that he could double-move and capture my capital with a stack of horse archers from four squares away (Not even letting me rush a spearman). Didn't help that my housemate was squawking at me about some BS at that very moment, but that's not her fault... Typical game, really.

          • Well hopefully it'd happen soon, I don't think I'd want to start a game much later than it is now...

                    • Good game last night; there were THREE different Inca players (They get given different colours, I think that's new with the patch), and I, as Carthage, still managed to pop out Stonehenge before all three industrial civs! With MasterDave as his usual Korea, meaning five financial civs, the game went along really nicely, until deitydude decided to place a city two squares from Korea, and so his destruction was ensured from that point.

Ming and Rah didn't seem to have an easy time of it; Rah had some bad luck with Barbarians, and I believe there was not a single hammer-producing tile in Ming's city radius. He left as I started sending in my military, although I'm thinking we should make a formal surrendering procedure for when that happens, as leaving like that seems to give the AI that takes over an extra move, plus it lets them upgrade all their units at cut-price, very annoyingly.

MD launched an attack on me, as was to be expected; I was quite amused by the fact that I'd conquered the Barbarian city of Numidian with my Numidian Cavalry, and I whipped almost every person of the city to create a garrison for it. I couldn't save it though (Too many Hwa'chas), but got my revenge by burning one of his cities to the ground. It got a bit staltematey though, and i left as Ming's final city got burnt to the ground.

Interesting new strategy implemented: use the Oracle to get Metal Casting, rush a Forge, then use an engineer specialist for a good chance of getting a Great Engineer relatively early. Poor Ming though, no religion but three Great Prophets

                        • All those incas and only one survived Even after losing two cities to the barbs when I had two 80% + attack odds to save them. Since those were my 3rd and 4th cities, I'm sure I would have been more competitive otherwise.

The metal casing strat has been discussed in many threads and can be quite effective. But you have to rush that forge quickly or the odds are too heavy for a prophet. The trick may be using a philo leader so you get two cracks at it but you'll risk losing the race to oracle.

                          • Yeah... it was a tough starting position. While I had all the food in the world, no production. And all the strategic resourses were very far away, making it difficult to keep attached to them. When Gibsie took that city, it split my civ into three crappy parts... and that was pretty much the end of me. If I had lost either of the side cities, I could have at least fought back for a while longer before I was total toast

And as bad as my starting position was, all the land around it sucked as well. The one river basin I finally got to was like 20 or more squares away from my starting positon.

Just for the record the city in question was overlapping my capital. He actually placed a city on the outer end of my cap 2 or 3 turns earlier and I just tried to build one between my cap and his new city.

If building a city in you own cap's cultural sphere is too intrusive on another civ, I plead guilty.

I think the real fact of the matter was that he was ready to attack and I was the closest/easiest target. Nothing wrong with that, thats Civ. But please don't make it sound like I provoked the issue by putting some extraneous city in the middle of his civilization.

                              • Yep, I was already planning to attack DD, but a city being placed three tiles from one of my cities (the cultural boundry allowed me to set up right next to the city and stay within my borders) compelled me to attack sooner than I was planning to.

Even if I had not attacked, I think that city was going to get flipped to me in about 30-35 turns (and I would have chosen to raze it, since it overlapped so badly with my existing city). I do not understand why that city was built where it was.
