Dave likes big stacks. Being listed at the top attracts big stacks.

The reason I had to attack Trev was that he put that city on my border to take the iron there. The iron was three tiles from my second city, and I was desperately trying to expand my culture to control it, but when the Russians put that city there, I had no choice but to attack or play the Romans without any iron.
The reason I left was that, in my experience, once the double team gets rolling it is not going to stop. I had minimal defenses at my capital which was closest to Deity's stack of doom after my northern city had fallen. Even if Deity had made peace after trashing my only city with horses, it would have been a slow death for Rome waiting for Trev and Deity to come back later with better tech units. I was too crippled after building all of those axes, cats, and praets, losing many of them in a stalemate war, and then losing an important city in the north. I had just invented crossbows, but I would have had no time to deploy more than one or two before Deity's stack would have reached Rome. I was beaten by the doubleteam, and was probably already doomed even before that by not being able to complete my attemped conquest of Trev.

The iron was 6 squares from my capital and probably about 8 from Daves capital, I would be foolish not to build a city there and take advantage of the iron, if I let Dave build a city to take advantage of it, he would be building within about 4 squares of my capital, not a viable option. There was no overlap between my cities usable squares and Daves cities usuable squares, an iron square with its 5 hammers of production was never going to be wasted, that city also had cows and rice in its range so it was a very valuable city to me and within my natural territory.
And thus the main difference between IV and II.
Games turn on the resources. Yes, resources were important in II but not critical. Critical means war. I love it.
That and of course, you can't kill a stack with one catapult.

You cannot kill a stack with 1 cat, but what I found against Dave was if I used 1 or 2 cats against his stack, then my axes on the attack would target his cats and kill them, limiting what collateral damage he could do to my units. That helped my capital in particular survive as he had to approach my city on terrain with no defensive advantage.
Well I hope you guys get another chance to join us in the future.

Yeah, it's truly a great game Rah. Love Civ 4
It's also a great equaliser without WLTP days, CS etc.
Maybe our groups can join up more often for an ongoing game? Particularly over Xmas

I would like to play more games with you guys as well over the holidays. I could see some very competitive games coming up with some interesting diplomacy...

How about we try and find a day or two in a row for a big one game marathon?
If we start on a day early in Australia - 8am say, that would be around late afternoon in America. So if you guys would like to start then and go well in to the night we can play all day
Maybe a 12 hour session followed up on the following day?

I think it should be possible after christmas maybe to get several days together, I will be away for a few days at Christmas, but from the 29th I will have the next about 5 days mostly free.
First Master, Banan-Abbot of the Nana-stary, and Arch-Nan of the Order of the Sacred Banana.
Marathon, the reason my friends and I have been playing the same hotseat game since 2006...
