  • Zoroastrianism vs. Taoism vs. Confucianism: Who would you leave out?

Here is a little poll to satisfy my own curiosity. Out of the three religions stated, which deserves the most to be in Civ IV? To me, Zoroastrianism was the one religion absent in Civ IV that deserved to be in there. Confucianism and Taoism are probably the religions I would be most willing to part with, but I can't in all honesty say that I would cut either of the two for Zoroastrianism. On the other hand, I can't say that if pressed, I wouldn't either. It is a very close call, IMO.

Oops, I voted wrong. I meant to say "cut out Taoism," but misread the poll and instead thought I was voting to "put in Zoroastrianism."

Yes, I think Zoroastrianism does need to be in the game. While it does not have very many modern proponents, its impact on earlier days was enormous.

I would like to see Judaism eliminated to be honest. Judaism to me is the ghetto religion the Jews fostered after being scattered across the globe - not the belief system of the Israelites which crucially featured animal sacrifice as a core part of its practice.

Christianity and Islam pretty well represent the monotheistic faiths, so Zoroastrianism seems a bit superfluous to me.

I would much rather see an Egyptian or Mediterranean pantheons represented in some form. Definitely no Asian religions should be eliminated to make way for yet another middle eastern faith.

There's a sizeable Zoroastrian population in India (they're called Parsis).

Yes, I know of them. However, they are numbered in the hundreds of thousands, rather than millions, unless I am mistaken.

Well, Confucianism really isn't a religion as much as it is a philosophy or a lifestyle.

Taoism began in a similar fashion, but evolved to have more mystical aspects and is more properly called a religion than Confucianism.

The "real" (pardon the contrived terminology) religion in China was the mysticism and ancestor worship that the Chinese practice(d), and upon which Con. and Tao. were later superimposed, sometimes simultaneously.

Zorosomethingism shouldn't be in the game, as it's impossible to spell correctly without having a dictionary nearby

From a strictly historical point of view, Judaism, as a non-missionary religion should be left out, however it is one of the most known religions in the world, and as such I can see a reason to keep it in.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about either Taoism or Confucianism (it is likely that historically either of them had more adherents than Christianity, Islam and Judaism combined) to decide which one should be left out. Possibly, Shintoism should have also been included.
The problem with leadership is inevitably: Who will play God?

Personally, I would like to see atheism in the place of Confusianism. Confusianism is more of a philosophy of how to live from my understanding of it, and atheism is a widespread belief about the gods, that their aren't any. It could be founded with scientific method or biology, perhaps.
