Yes. Were they to use made-up religions, that would open the door for made-up civilizations and techs. In other words, scenarios, not vanilla core game.

The ideal solution would be to have a long list of religions, and have the game pick from it randomly when a new religion is founded, and, if the number of religions allowed in that game is set to less than 6, have the game also randomly pick which of the standard religion-founding techs should actually result in religion-founding.

So there would be a random probability of founding Christianity when you were first to research polytheism for example. Or Hinduism when you discovered Monotheism. Great idea.

Religion-founding techs could have several religions associated with them.

So the first to discover polytheism could found either Hinduism, or Asgardism or Olympianism (or whatever the Norse and Greek religions woudl be called).


I think it would be interesting though to have "Ideologies" as well as reglions, such as Liberalism, Communism, and Facism.

These would be similar to religions (in that they get discovered with the appropriate technology, and spread as religions do).

You could also select them as State "Religions", although there would be restrictions on which Religions Civics could be used with them. (A Facist or Communist "Theocracy" could make sense, but not Facist Pacifism, for example).

Rather than having temples and cathedrals associated with them, you would get happiness/unhappiness modifiers based on your Civics choices, and (to a lesser extent), on the civics choices of other civilizations, depending on your relationship with them.
