Creating speeds is the easiest part, IMO. Just set all the coefficients to something the same. Quick = 50, Normal = 100, Epic = 150. Marathon's out of whack with 300 but 200 for units, which is why I don't like it.

Just create a speed with all coefficients at 400 and you'll have an uber-slow game. Personally, the games I play for personal enjoyment only, I play with what I call "Solver's Epic" - Epic mode with Research at 200. That is, research is one third more expensive than it is on Epic by default. I've found that this pace suits me perfectly, giving a rather long game with quite some time in each era.

I've fused together about 35 mods - once I began to understand how to edit the Python to incorporate these sometimes contradictory mods, I gradually stopped documenting my changes.

Now, when the new patch comes out, I'll have alot of work ahead of me (my own fault) just to figure out where I made all of the changes....

So I'm considering not upgrading to the new patch unless the documentation declares a significant upgrade to the AI or the inclusion of new units, new civs, etc.

Who am I fooling? I'll probably download it the first moment I can and play vanilla for a week just to see all the changes.

... Seriously, will the publish a list of altered XML, Py files? Would a date stamp beyond Dec 2x, 2005 be enough to know that the file was changed?

Bad, bad boy! But you will suffer enough for your transgressions, so I won't impose punishment...

Don't know about the dates on the files, but there are many, many good compare tools out there which will ease your pain.

The best, IMHO, is the *ix "diff" and "diff3" utilities. On WinXP platforms, you can either install Cygwin (my preference, but I have a ton of disk space and don't mind the constant updating that Cygwin developers do) or you can also look for other non-Cygwin versions of those two tools. They are out there, and like Cygwin many are free to use.

Simply put, they can tell you what lines changed (additions, deletions, changes) between 2 text files (that's "diff") or between 3 versions (that's "diff3"). And "diff3" can even merge changes from two newer versions and a "base" or older version.

From these three versions of a CIV XML file:

        Patch 1.52 version
        Your modded version
        "New" patched (maybe) version

"diff3" can create a new "merged" version, with conflicts marked (i.e., places where both modded and "new" patches affected the same part of the file).

Powerful stuff. Use sparingly and with care. Read the documentation before you attempt!

        HTH

I just read that thread, and considering the flaming Thamer got for posting some really useful information I'd be surprised if he ever bothered again.

I remember at the end of febuary the developers were saying a patch would be out by mid march that would fix most of our problems. That was three weeks ago, i understand if it got delayed but they could have atleast came and said that it might take longer. Its been almost 4 months now and still...

Indeed, he got a pretty rude reception. And people wonder why they don't post more often.

There is some great stuff at CFC, there are some fantastic things on their strategy forum, as good as Vel's excellent threads here.

Anyway the strategy forum is great but their civ 4 general forum is an absolute warzone, so I haven't registered.

Damn, if that's the reception they get there, then there's no wonder they don't like to post information about the next patch

                  where's the bloody patch

it is a sad old situation indeed...

especially when with each passing day it looks more and more likely we will be buying the patch within Warlords... $$$

they certainly are money hungry if that is the case... all them dollars they raised selling us this ( as usual) incomplete program and they not bothering to stay in touch..

hope they not coming skiing with us this season... we might forget to give them a lift home

                              • Holy Crap, I just read the CivFanatics thread... no wonder CivIV people don't come out and talk about patches!

Though I'd LOVE to take the bet they have... that would mean I'd have to register there, and that's not happening.
