Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess."

I'll only agree to random events if said events include a giant rampaging Banana God that will smite all the heathens.

            Mine is a conditional yes.

If you have random events you must have both positive and negative ones. Have bad things happen to the civs at the top and good things happen to the civs at the bottom. The random events should be fun and they can't be unbalancing. A plague that wipes out half of the population is right out.

This poll has already disproved the statement from the other thread:

But it definitely looks like most people think it should be in as an option.

No way. I hated the random events in SMAC, those were game breakers. And small random events throughout the game with no meaningful impact would be just a waste of code. We have enough randomness in Civ4, no need to add in any more.

You do know they were optional in SMAC?

I would like them the same way in Civ IV - existing, but optional.

Natural disasters are pretty much irrelevant on the civ scale.

Including them is really quite silly, when you consider that on most civ maps of the world the UK is big enough for a single city you being to see that even something like the Great Fire of London is neither here nor there and the destruction of Pompei is just a village getting taken away. Even the recent Tsunami, horrific as it was, is the loss of villages and towns, not a city razing event.

                        Please no random events.
                        It's a game, not a world simulation.
What fun is it that something happens that you can't control in anyway? Exactly, there is no fun in there.

Indeed, if they are powerful enough to be meaningful then it would be like a kill moment in a shooter where the bullet pattern conspires to leave no way out – zero fun, maximum annoyance. If they aren’t powerful enough to be meaningful then it’s micro management for the sake of it – zero fun, moderate annoyance.

Put in erupting volcanoes for eye candy, sure, but don’t allow them influence anything. I should probably put that in my 'Pointless Improvements' thread actually.
