You are such a masochist, man. Fighting with the computer and/or the OS just to play a game definitely isn't fun in my book.

OTOH, trying to squeeze more performance out of a prehistorical computer is.

You know, my pet peeve is how all the later versions went out of their way to make the map more incomprehensible , units more confusing , distances more difficult to estimate and interface more difficult to work with

I roll my eyes at that

I'm playing Civ4 and I'm quite liking the design so far, but the interface and usability is atrocious.

      Here's how it should look:

Ah! Those were the times!(admittably I played Civ later than most others here, but it was through Civ1 I came into love with the genre... )

Yeah, did I mention how in Civ1 units conveniently blinked when active?

In Civ4, I can't tell which unit is active half of the time!

              Now that you mentions it

I'm still waiting for the Civ1 graphics mod to Civ4
This space is empty... or is it?

                Meh, Civ 1 is ugly.

That's why grannies like you can play civ1 while the more modern and healthy persons can play civ4

I think that´s a spy or a diplomat or something like that.

It's the Roman diplomat. If it had been red, it had been the barbarian leader.

There are no spies in Civ1, only diplomats.
                          And barbarian leaders.

Your eyes must be sore from all that rolling. I agree with you that the currently selected unit is not always obvious - I usually hit C to centre on the current unit and see where it is, then look at the bottom left of the screen to see what is. Apart from that, I don't find the interface 'atrocious'. I see you prefer the Civ 1 screen, but I'm not sure that many would agree with you.

Compared to the cluttered mess of buttons and thingies in C3C, I think Civ4 is much better. Less is more! Unless it´s pixels of course...
