  • I'm thinking what I'd like to see most in Civ IV is a port of several of the Civ III Conquests into Civ IV.

    • Bring back coastal forts/defense. Why should your cities just get pounded by a naval barrage?

Fire everyone who works at firaxis, and get innovate new people who will actually incorporate SMAC\EU2 and finally go beyond them instead of making another civilization1 simulator.
A ship at sea is its own world. To be the captain of a ship is to be the unquestioned ruler of that world and requires all of the leadership skills of a prince or minister.

Option to say "wtf are you going to give me for going to war with person A" in trade negotiations... Not just yes/no

              • Giant Death Robots in the main game!

Actually - most of the next war mod in the main game - plus have the game continue on the planet you go to.

More directable trade - will not have a huge effect in SP - but in PBEM and Pitboss - could have huge effects embargoing a player or two.

I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

A little bit more advanced is what I have in mind:

When an AI asks for me to join the war I want the following options:

                  "Let's get the war startet"
"I'm in if you agree to my demands"
"Not right now" (The AI will not be able to ask again for 10 turns)
"No way!" (The AI will not be able to ask you to join the war against that civ for 50 turns)

If I pick the second option I go into a special version of the trade-table. Here you can ask for money (e.g. you give me 5 gold for each turn I'm at war with Russia). You should also be able to set a delay, e.g. "I'll join the war in 5 turns, I'll need some time to get my units ready"
Being able to delay is what I'm missing the most as often I'm in a situation where I really want to be friends with the one who asks (and saying no will only hurt the relation), but I'm not ready for a war as all my units are located far away (meaning I might lose a city to the enemy if I agree right away)
The enemy might be able to find out about this depending on how much he's spending on spying on either of us. They might see the message "Our spy in Washington has discovered Americas plans on attacking us in 3 turns" a few turns after agreeing on the attack
This space is empty... or is it?

                  • One thing I don't want: smoother transitions. What has always made the Civ franchise superior in my mind is that advancement is very non-linear. For example, i can't stand games where weapons advance over 20 small graduations. Realisitic maybe, but boring. I love how Axemen can crush warriors. If you smooth things out too much it begins to feel like you are playing a spreadsheet instead of a game. The key is to have the mathematics of the game be based on low integers. Attack of 5 vs. 2 instead of 2.21 vs. 2.17. Six food or four. In other words, the decisions you make have to be interesting and have some real understandable impact on the game, not some nearly random statistical effect.

That is why I am in general against the proliferation of military units, buildings and wonders. The more there are, the less impact each has on the game, and the less interesting the choices become.

reminded me of another idea I had. If you spend enough espionage points on a civ then you should get heads up if they plan to go to war with you in X turns.
