  • Its funny. On 1.00 I did not have these problems on the same laptop and I even had less RAM (512 vs. 1024)
Overall, the patch is an incredible improvement for me as it removed the black terrain bug and now tiles correctly show gold/shield/coin.
However, it introduced skipping wonder/intro movies (where I just had skipping sound) and made objects (Monty's head, the Torah) disappear but not consistently.
Also, now I get little messages - can't find hanging gardens movie, can't play some other sound. I'll have to play closer attention.
And still the incredile hang time and screen distortion after loading a save game. I'd like to play something other than Quicks in one sitting.

I had concerns about the whole 3-D thing from the get go but I understand you need it to sell games and make money. I was fine with 2-D. My big worry was always that they'd spend all their time programming animations of Spearman polishing their spears (hey!) between turns and forget that we need some AI too.

Agreed. I'm not a fanboy but it seems to work well so far.

But yes it's true that no game is perfect on release. But in this case we are talking about a game that hardly works at all. I mean games that totally freezes the system. Hmm reminds me of the good old dos/c-64 days.
You can snail mail everything back to Take2 along with proof of purchase and include a letter saying you have carefully read and DO NOT agree with the license agreement. (Trust me, If you actaully read the thing you will come up with about 100 reasons to object to it.) They will take the game back and eventually send you a check for your purchase price. The address is in the text of the license agreement or on their web site.

              • I have downloaded the patch (1.09), and tried to run it. I get:

"The setup has detected that no version of Sid Meier's Civilization 4 is installed. This update requires that a previous version of the application be installed"

I also tried it with the Civ 4 disk in. Same result.

Needless to say, the game IS installed.

I really am becoming upset here.

                • I received the disks that were mis-labeled (install is actual the play disk and vice versa). My game has the freeze problem too. Is there a possible connection?

These freezes and CTD all seem random (many different systems well within recommended requirements, drivers, resources). Is mis-labled disks a common thread?

It seems like mislabeling disks is a production problem and if there is one production problem there could be more (ie slightly different version of the game getting released even though it says version 1.00). I know this is unlikely but just curious.

as for the "polygon crap": it does look nicer now, but the game itself has slowed down like mad with the inefficient scrolling (remove mouse from the side and it still scrolls 1-2 tiles further). in the name of "smoothness", other factors like performance have been castrated.
Why not reduce graphics detail to minimum and get better performane whle reducing "polygon crap"?
                    It's all in the options.

I don't know about saberwolf but I don't get any better performance from low texture or turning off the movies.

Although, turning off the movies has sped the game up since I don't have to wait for any movies! Apparently even the pop-ups for discoveries are considered movies cause I just cruse from one tech to the next without so much as a bump.

The only thing I don't like is when I pop a hut and it gives me a tech I have to go to the log and find out what it is cause the game doesn't say a word... just keeps on keeping on.

But I tried a huge Terra map last night and it was jerky and slow from the get go. So I turned the detail to low, all the graphics stuff to low, checked the low texture checkbox and everything. Restarted the game and it was still just as jerky and slow as it was with high detail textures. AND it looked stupid.

My card is obviously big enough to handle the graphics, this is a shear amount of memory issue. They need better memory management.

i basically said the same as padillah.
no real speed difference when changing the textures and details.
in fact, i'm not even sure if there is any difference at all...

I noticed a difference: it looked stupid. The combat animations were choppy, the global view was very fuzzy... but the game itself, mouse response, leaderhead animations, text highlight on mouseover, were all the same as before on high-detail.

When I say the combat animations were choppy I mean they were deliberatly missing frames, the warrior had his arm cocked back, then it just snapped forward and then it fell to his side... not really an "anmiation".
