Started a game on a huge map. That pesky freeze thing happens again. Worldbuilder on a small map, feeze. Low graphics quality, freeze. Movies turned off, freeze. Windowed mode, freeze. Sent email to tech support at 2k games but get no response. Just freeze, freeze, freeze.

NONE of the movies in my game play without skipping every second or so (they're basically unwatchable), not even the opening one

      • All of mine run fine. The two I mentioned run fine as well, until the end, where they just halt.

        • I'm not having that problem either. However, I strongly suspect a resource problem for the variety of "end game" freezing, crashing etc.

Wittlich upgraded to 3 gig of RAM and doesn't have any movie problems, crashing, etc.

          • 1.00 All of my movies ran smooth although the sound skipped every few seconds
1.09 All my movies skip and jerk and are unwatchable

I even upgraded my memory from 512 MB to 1 Gig with no improvement in the skipping

            • I think I read that the patch reset .ini settings. Could anyone having more trouble now have had their resolution set to medium or low before patching?

              • The patch sped things up considerably. But the movies are jerky here as well

                  • I think the fault lies mostly with the bink engine, not civ... but then again there is, AFAIR, a setting that determines what does the rendering, civ or bink. I think the default is civ, not native bink. Try turning that on, see what happens.

Bink video is used in alot of games - find one where the playback is smooth, copy the bink32.dll and keep it.

Also, look in the civ ini file. There are a bunch of settings in there that may help the smoothness abit.

                    • Chaning SyncInput to 1 in ini file made my openeing video become smooth, while it was choppy in both pre-patch and after-patch.

                      • It's not the Bink player or the movie that's the problem, it's how Civ4 deals with it. The intro movie plays perfectly on a standalone Bink player (try it yourself - go to the intro movie file, right click -> open), in windowed mode (probably 800x600)

                        • Patches are great and always welcome. I noticed a few improvements in the performance also Check it out though, the Space Race victory is still way too easy for the AI to achieve. I've played 5 games now on Noble and lost them all to a space race before the year 2005. It seems to me like an interstellar spaceship to Alpha Centauri would be an enormous undertaking; something that humanity thusfar has been unable to accomplish. Just a thought. Keep up the good work Firaxis!

                          • Since I was having crashes ingame that seemed to get much worse after I built a wonder and the movie played I tried some experiments.

I have a 2.5 Ghz Dell with 512Mb main memory and a GeForce 420MX card with 64Mb VRAM. I started tracking virtual memory usage (I upped my pagefile to 1.5Gb for CIV) and found that just watching a movie will add anywhere from 500Mb to 1 Gb to my virtual memory usage.

After seeing this I disabled movies in my cfg files and haven't had a crash since.

Hmm, seeing as how they are now completly worthless on my system (used to be the sound skipped, now the whole movie stutters) I think I'll turn them off.

                              Thank you.

                              • Movies are now unwatchable for me, too. Too bad, they worked great pre-patch. In general it loads and runs faster though, especially with updated Blue Marble terrain.
