  • If anybody is curious, even removing the link wasn't necessary, since patch is not anymore to be found at old url adress anywa (MarG porbably moved it).

Anyway, there is no chance I would uninstall this, since patched game runs fine for me. I even have proper working hotseat.

Exempt if I could know what this big bug is about.

    • I work in software development. The biggest danger is this:

Let's say that the patch version that you installed(1.0.8.4 for example) introduces a new bug, and the patch they end up releasing (1.0.8.5 for example) assumes that you have version 1.0.0.16 installed (the cd-rom version). It might not remove the bug that was introduced in 1.0.8.4. In order for you to get all the benefits of 1.0.8.5 you might have to uninstall, reinstall 1.0.0.16 and then upgrade to 1.0.8.5. No big deal, but a pain in the butt. Now if uninstalling the game doesn't remove whatever caused the problem in 1.0.8.4 then you are screwed, but that's probably not the case.

When my company releases software, we only support upgrades from the last customer released version to the next customer released version, if we create an intermediate version during development (like the one that almost got released yesterday), our testers need to roll back to the last released version before applying the patch. And you would too.

DISCLIMER, all the version numbers I put below are just examples, not necessarily the real ones.

        Great summary of the situation.

        • Indeed. Great sumary.
But... If I get the patch I would give it a try, even knowing the risks. Especially because it seems to correct the memory lack issues... My games tend to be sluggish in the late ages.

I hope it will released soon. It's a great game, but this entire situation is killing the fun. It’s very embarrassing… I feel ashamed for Firaxis!

          • Any news on a fix for the "bread only" graphic glitch on some Nvidia cards?

            • DL'd the patch last night and it fixed my problem with black tiles. I can play for a little bit, but it locks or crashes to restart pretty frequently.

                • Just DL'd that before work this morning. Hopefully it'll fix my crash problem...although if it does, there's a really good chance that my garage won't get cleaned this weekend.

                  • Well, here's the situation for me:
I can't play Civ IV on the laptop, since I have the eternal fog of war problem. I installed the patch, and Voila! I have no cheshire cat heads, and no fog of war problems. The patch fixed all of that. But when I start up the game, a little popup comes on telling me that my Laptop is below minimum specs.

But I played on anyways, keeping the world map at small or tiny. It seems to be working fine.

This gives strong support for the cheshire cat and fog of war problems being software problems, not hardware problems.

I have yet to install the patch on my desktop, where the game is running fine, except it gets REALLY laggy towards the end of the game in large maps. I've had the game freeze up, I think partly because of the memory leak issues. But right now, I've got 70 turns left in my game, it is basically unplayable. I have to do a turn, save it, exit to desktop, relaunch, play a couple of turns, save it, exit to desktop, relaunch repeat.

                    • I played with the patch some last night and more today. It did improve the time before it started flashing the map.

It still has crashed to desktop a few times and once left the desktop in 4bit color, res 800.

It seems to play a bit better. This was from a save before the patch. I will try a fresh game next and see how far it gets.

It reset many of my settings such as music and movies, so what that.

                      • Hey, I've got an ATI video card so I know how frustrating it is when you can't get the game you paid $50 bucks for to work - but let's give Firaxis a little credit.... they are working diligently to get a patch out and (sort of almost released it) less than a month after the game was released!

That's pretty good service comparitively speaking.

Don't worry, we'll get our patch and this whole thread will vanish like a fading, vanishy-fadey thing...

How do you tell what their current randomized, or non-randomized, personalities are?
Traits and behavoir are two separate things. The Aggressive civs, for example, all use their traits differently: Montezuma as opposed to Alexander as opposed to Kublai Khan.

You can edit a scenario to make, for example, Washington to behave like Genghis Khan, or Napoleon to use the behavoirs of Ghandi.

                          • Is there a way to see what the standard behaviour of a leader is? I can accept that they always get the same Civ traits but I would like to see how the behaviour is set up. Are they a bunch of files that control that and they are randomly selected when starting a randomized game? I was actually hoping that Civ traits could be randomized as well.

                            • I believe the best solution is to wait a while ,then release a beta patch so players could betatest it and then fixing problems and release a strong, real patch.

The risk is that the patch will be in needing of a further fix just after been released.
