I was using whichever sound setting was there by default, and just changed it to "Use default sound" or whatever it is, instead of the sound skipping every 2 seconds it skips every 5 instead, improvement, but not what I was hoping for. Although my PC didnt CTD or reboot after I did this and was able to play for more than 1 hour !!!! SWEET DEAL !!!!!

I'm experincing the exact same thing.

      Avertec 5400 notebook
      2800+ AMD XP-M processor
      512 MB RAM
      XP Home: SP - 2
      Realtec-97 Audio
And my anti-virus software is Norton Anti Virus [up to date]

Hum, windows update is reporting Update for WMDRM-enabled Media Players (KB891122)

Guess I'll update and try again.

      Didn't help.

      stero was default.

tried "system config" : no affect

tried mono: didn't help the startup/intro.

Can't find the miles fast 2d driver option.

I also have the same problem with skipping in the Wonder Movies

My computer's a bit below recommended specs, but everything works just fine...until I build a wonder

All drivers are the most recently released

I am having the same problems as everyone else here.

          SYSTEM SPECS:

          P4 2.4 GHz
          1 Gig DDR 2700 RAM
3 Gb Free Hdd space after install on that drive partition
          SB Live! 5.1

          Steps I've already tried:

I've tried each and every setting combo in the Audio settings of Civ 4 itself to no avail.

I've tried testing the audio via the dxdiag testing utilities and everything plays just fine.

I've tried lowering the hardware acceleration settings for my sound via the WinXP sound utility in the Control Panel.

I've tried lowering the sampling rate from 48 to 44.1 in the SB Live! control panel.

I've tried setting up my speakers in each of the different settings for speaker setups like headphones, stereo speakers, keyboard speakers, monitor speakers, and none of those worked.

I read the readme which says to select the MILES Fast 2D Driver but from what my research turns up this should be selectable inside the game as it is in Zoo Tycoon 2 and Driv3r... So apparently that's a missing option all together.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling my soundcard. I made sure all my applications, screensavers, everything were shut down during my testing.

I am not having sound issues in anything other than the wonder movies.

I still have to try out downloading the RAD tools, but I think we're gonna need a patch here for this fix from Firaxis.

I hate to say it but HOW did this fall through the cracks??? Creative Soundcards are EASILY the most prolific configuration throughout the computer world next to folks just using on board soundcard...The QA on this game seems very sloppy...

UPDATE: I can play the movies just fine via RAD Tools. so I know it's not my computer that's causing the problem it's something in the game that's causing the interrupt. There could be a problem with resource allocation that certain cards don't understand.

I am experiencing the sound skipping too. I have an SB Audigy 2 ZS sound card. I've tried every sound setting as well.

Last night, I played for 3 hours. The first two wonder movies skipped, then the rest that played in that session (3 more wonder movies) did not.

Same here, used to have the same issue on Neverwinter Nights as well. The Miles sound system could be causing this thing...

              System specs:
              Athlon XP 1700+
              R9600 Pro Atlantis
              Win2k
              512MB of PC2100 memory
              Sound Blaster 5.1

I hate to throw another twist to the problem, but I get the skipping audio only during the "Firaxis" animation and the opening movie. The wonder movies and everything else works fine. And I just have a crappy geforce4 mx integrated card.

I seem to have the skipping sound problem too. Nimoy sounds like Porky Pig. Music sounds ok, I think...it's hard to tell.

                  SB Live! Value
                  NVidia GeForce4 MX 420
                  XP SP2
                  512 MB RAM
                  Dell 8200 machine

I've tried all of the settings within the game, but changing them has no effect. All drivers are up to date.

                  Any suggestions?

Once I updated my catalyst drivers to 5.10 my sound no longer skips during wonder movies.

I've got this sound problem too.

it happens on all the intro movies and also on the wonder movies.

I'm using a SB Live! Gamer (ok its an older card) but it has all the latest driver goodness.

motherboard is an Abit KT7-Max2, Athlon 2800+, 1 gig ram, and GF4 4200 Ti 128MB.

why oh why couldn't they use a simple Mpeg encoding?

Ok guys, I downloaded the Omega drivers and now my game runs good as far as the sound goes. I have no more skipping during the intro or wonder movies. Give it a shot.

Those appear to be for ATI only. Anything for people with with nvidia cards?

Yes, the opening movie cuts in and out on the sound, and the wonder movies and also the end movies, since I played myself.

I have a standard setup Live! card that plays fine everywhere else and in any game I have. Also the game starts slowing down and gets laggy, and I took a reading with Task Manager and it gave a Virtual Memory Peak usage size of 557mB and I was verily into the game on a standard map and about 5 players in a single player epic game.

Simply put, the game has probably a memory leak. Since then I have started a Tiny World game, with only 3 players and the game has went further (only in the year 1625B.C. now) but the movies do the same thing.

I wonder now if it is the binkw32.dll file but I tried another one from another game (2002 date on it) and it does the same thing.

I think it is the game, and the game needs a patch!

There is nothing I can set the sound to - - in Advanced Settings -- Audio to get rid of it, and all I do is run Stereo, which did not make any difference whether it was Stereo, or System Config Setting or Direct 3D Sound or one of the others, since I only use the ones for 2 speakers, and that has to be demanding then all the other settings like EAX and all of those or Surround Sound.

The game with the *.bik files are the ones that are skipping, but otherwise the *.mp3 or *.wav files seem to be playing okay.

I do not have a Bink Player, so I can not test it out of the game, but I think reading an above post, it is clear that it probably has something to do with the buffer size in the game for the movie files, I am guessing!

SB Live! 5.1 makes me think you should try this fix, which is to turn off the Voice Recording device in SB Live!. Another user with the same card fixed things this way.

                                I have an Nvidia card.

Click on Nvidia GF at the top, and then click on Win 2k/Xp that will appear right under it.
