    Hmmm if that is a problem it could be easily corrected by calculating the walk-distance between the units and if it's too far (>3 tiles) relocating some of the units.

      I don't like starting with more than one unit at all. I want to start with a lonely settler and nothing more...

        The map scripts are randomly generated.

        Previous Civs:
        * Continents
        * Pangaea
        * Archipelago

        Civ4:
        * The classic three, plus eighteen more!

        (Well, there are twenty in the box. Fantasy Realm was held back for later release.)

        Great Plains has a slice of the Gulf of Mexico, and a river system that (loosely) models the Mississippi system. No oceans!

        There are oceanic maps. There are landlocked maps. There are some special maps tailored to MP.

        Happy civving!

          Nice preview. It'll make getting a game started go much faster; don't know why faster is good, but I do.

            Part 2!

            Excellent read. Good points about how ICS can't work.... amazing how good the pacing seems in Civ4. I am doubly excited, and I like the religious aspect as well.

                Now I'm really regretting not springing for faster shipping.

                  Can you turn off the huts? I always hated them in Civ2.

                    It's certainly possible, though i'd be curious HOW easy it would be ...

                      Very excellent writeup. I have to wait until 6th Nov, before I can start playing, so this little series can comfort me until then..

                        I'm hooked! Having just fired up Civ 3 for a nostalgic last game, I've reached the point of invading England with 30 tanks, 15 artillery and 15 infantry to be reminded precisely what it is I don't like about the endgame. The blitzkreig took the whole evening to play and Lizzie still has a handful of cities left to mop up. Life is too busy for 40 hour games these days.

                        More variety and less quantity is definitely the way to go. I can't believe how interesting it has been watching Sulla get to 3 cities and 8 units and thinking about all those early choices to make. I think in Civ 3 I've picked the same techs in the same order for almost every game. The nearby resources are really going to influence that now.

                        To doubt everything or to believe everything are two equally convenient solutions; both dispense with the necessity of reflection.

                            Two more days, and I'll start my first game ... (hopefully)

                              How so? I thought it would come to Austria not before November 4th?

                                One software shop in Vienna claims that the U.S. version will be available on Friday, October 28th. I told them in no unclear terms to put aside a copy for me. (The vender nodded knowingly and noted down my phone number ... obviously, I'm not the only one in this city who is counting the hours till Civ4.)
