  • v1.00 BUG Reports

So, Civ4 has been shipped, I expect many of you will be getting your hands on your copies in the next few hours, so time for a centralized bug report thread.

Only post bug reports here. No suggestions for the patch, no other irrelevant stuff, bugs only. Keep it as easy for the Firaxians as possible. Provide as many details on the bug as you can, post a screenshot if needed.

Now, let's hope there aren't too many posts in this thread .

New computer. Did not even have DirectX installed before the CIV 4 installation.

        Video drivers are updated.

When Civ4 goes to start, I get the Loading splash screen, then when the status bar shows up, it says something, then "Checking XML", or something along those lines (it flashes quickly), and then disappears.

In my event viewer, I get 2 entries on failure here.

Even better news... when I changed focus to save the screenshot and send, and went back, you COULD read the menus. But the game was stuttering - moving the menu would leave a footprint of it that only the river would re-render over. And then, it crashed my system. Not to desktop. Back to BIOS.

My first few moments have not been pleasant...

New update - Civ4 will NO LONGER START. It starts to load, then the system crawls - and I mean crawls like I have NEVER seen it. Mouse /screen updates every 4 seconds. When I end task Civlization4.exe, all returns to normal...

                System:

                Dual Athlon 2.2GHz
                1 GB DDR
                250GB HD
                Audigy2
                Nvidia 5900XT 71.70 drivers
                XP sp2

Again, Civ4 WILL NOT START anymore. I am about to uninstall and reinstall. I will not make any changes to resolutions or aliasing or any other settings this time, just run it straight, and let you know...

Just ran BFME to check the system, ran like a champ (BFME2 looks like the shiznit, by the way...)

Still screwed up. My pissed off meter is at 10.0.

Hangs every time - one time, it showed the load progress bar and it hung at Init Engine - but most of the time, it doesn't show the bar filling, it just freezes.

In order to make sure my system is running okay, I ran:

                  SP:WAW
                  R:TW
                  BFME
                  Quake (yeah, I'm old school)
                  UT
                  MOO3
                  Settlers:HoK
                  Pirates!
                  GalCiv
                  Civ3

                  No problems.

                  But Civ4 WILL NOT LOAD.

The first problem I noticed was during the world build phase - it ran, and I REALLY loved the throwback music and intro with Spock, that was CLASSIC. But when the bar showed finish, the graphics corrupted in all four corners - very wierd. Kinda hung for a second... then finally, there's my scouts and settlers. Moving a bit slow, but moving. I hit ESC to bring up the menu - and they were all blank. Blank city. So I alt-esc to desktop, posted the menu, went back... and I could see the entries! But it was bogged - very slow mouse. I moved the menu by dragging it slightly, and it moved, but left a copy of itself that only the river graphic rendered over. Tried a few more drags, same thing.

THEN BOOM. Reboot. Hard too. Swear I saw a quick flash of blue screen. Rebooted. And now it WILL. NOT. RUN.

I imagine there is an artifact from the crashed session that may be screwing it up. But WHERE? I may search my drive for files modified in the last day to see what turns up.

I figure the retail version also has a cache...

Go to My Documents\My Games\Civilization IV or a similar path, and find a Cache, XMLCache or some similar Cache folder and delete everything in it.

No cache directories found where all the other cIV folders are located. There are a couple settings in the ini file that I will try messing with.

                        Damn annoying so far!

I don't know how to say it without flaming / sarcasm but as you can guess i am able to read and to understand the written also.
So that was the first thing i did and suprise suprise it did nothing.
Also if you have had the time to read the dxdiag i attached you would have known that i already did update DirectX and my Video drivers.

But anyway at least thank you for your answer .

Look in c:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data for a Civ4 folder. Also, look in My Documents. If either one exists, that'd probably be where saved games and cached stuff go. Oh, also check My Documents\My Games, if it exists.

(Mind you, I don't have Civ IV yet since I'm waiting to see if it's chock full o' bugs like Civ III was, and to see what the reviews say, so I'm just guessing - but that's where you're SUPPOSED to put them, and many games now seem to do that. But there doesn't seem to be any agreement on which of those folders to actually put the stuff in. :P)

P.S. Application Data is hidden, so you need to have hidden folders showing to get in there, unless you paste the address into the Explorer address bar (in which case you need to have set explorer to show that :P).

                              Yes, the path is:
                              C:\Documents and Settings\\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4

                              Inside you find:
                              \CustomAssests\
                              \Logs\
                              \MODS\
                              \Patch\
                              \PublicMaps\
                              \Replays\
                              \Saves\
                              \ScreenShots\
                              \TransferredMaps\
                              CivilizationIV.ini
                              CivilizationIV.ini.bak

Nothing regarding caches anywhere sadly. And that is with View Hidden Files turned on...

Once nice thing is that the install folder (c:\Games\Sid Meier's CivilizationIV for me) actually has shortcuts back to these foldes. A nice touch...
