Okay, from CivFanatics, this appears to be an issue with ATI cards. And it does not seem to be a driver issue, as many older sets also fail.

Sadly, my backup computer also has an ATI card.

Hmmm... my kids pc does have an old GeForce2Ultra. Wonder if it will run there?

    For those interested...

Oh whoops, someone else had already said My Documents\My Games :P.

I wonder if the logs might show what the problem is.

For the person whose graphics adaptor doesn't support 640x480, look in CivilizationIV.ini, maybe it has the resolution in there (so you'd be able to change it). Or is it screwing up trying to play videos in 640x480, perhaps? Hmm. (Does the game itself really start at 640x480 by default?)

The problem may be that the Mobility Radeon 9800 only supports "Smart Shaders 1.0" and not "Smart Shaders 2.1" which the Desktop Radeon 9800 does. This is ATI's name for Transform and lighting/programable shaders. I suggest that you adjust the ingame video setting lower and see if this problen goes away, I've written a article on borderline systems here:

This website is for sale! proboards44.com is your first and best source for all of the information you’re looking for. From general topics to more of what you would expect to find here, proboards44.com has it all. We hope you find what you are searching for!

Today sometime I'll post the same article here on ACS for easy access. I hope this helps, but don't worrry the devs are watching.

Alright, I finally have this %$#^er running again. Had to nuke EVERYTHING, and I also bumped up to the latest NVidia drivers released last week.

I will note a bug that is affecting me - during gameplay, when I try to change resolution from 1024x768 to something higher, it pauses, changes and I can see the screen at the new resolution, but hte manu shows the old res, and it switches right back - nothing I am doing. Like it is changing, but then the menu is changing it right back. WIERD.

But, this time it did come up properly the whole way - no corrupted menus, no blank graphics. I wonder if the aliasing settings are to blame on this.

I plan on playing windowed, so we'll see if this is imparted by that...

CivFanatics says an issue on ATI cards? Can't believe it. Just can't - they SURELY tested this on tons of ATI cards. There is no way this gets out of QC and can't run on ATI.

I don't think it's a ATI issue per se, as I know that Radeon(desktop) cards as low as a 9600 have run CIV well, and I have a Radeon 9800 pro and run it no problem. I think this is an issues with having true T&L support.

Disk 2 is called the play disk, but Disk1 is what you are required to have in your drive to play

other then that, everything is fine

Still screwed up. Things works for a few turns before the renderer dies. Check the attached picture out. Game was running fine for 3 or 4 turns. Then, I clicked on the advisors, cycling through the buttons. Then I hit one... nothing, but it started to bog. Hit the close option on the advisor, think started bogging bad, like before, and you can see the results .

Color me extraordinarily disappointed in the finished product. Which sucks, because reading the manual, it seems the gameplay aims were just right (and many were ones I modded onto Civ3 myself). But there is something not right with this game engine.

Venger, that's very strange... I assure you, the betas ran fine on ATI cards and the engine itself is fine. Can't really imagine now what the problem is, though.

Nah there's no way it's a problem with my drivers, this system is freaking 1.5 months old. See below:

OS: MS Windows XP Pro (5.1, Build 2600)
                      System Manufacturer: Dell
                      System Model: Dimension XPSGEN5
BIOS: Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A02
                      Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.20 GHz (2 CPUs)
                      Memory: 2046MB RAM
Page file: 357MB used, 3580MB available
                      DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

No problems found with DX in dxdiag.

Video card: Radeon X850 XT PE

If these are the problems, then the game is going back cuz there's no excuse.

Hangs every time - one time, it showed the load progress bar and it hung at Init Engine - but most of the time, it doesn't show the bar filling, it just freezes.

In order to make sure my system is running okay, I ran:

                        No problems.

                        But Civ4 WILL NOT LOAD.

I hear ya bro. LOL I can run everything else with no problems. I just tried Pirates and Doom3, no prob. The INIT ENGINE keeps crapping out.

Solver - I don't have an ATI card, I was just remarking that I cannot believe there is a general ATI card issue...

                          I have an Nvidia 5900XT...

Wait for the patch, it is kind of sad but the game was indeed rushed so it is possible that these bugs were not spotted by the QA team.
