It's not a bug. For being able to cut forest you must know bronze working.
Same for planting farms (agriculture) and mines (mining)

Ouch and I just noticed something else when I tried to run Civ4 again. When I got the "Rendering" bug again and Civ crapped to the desktop, EVERYTHING was running slow as molasses. I dunno if it's a memory leak or what...

Firaxis is currently looking into the startup issues people are experiencing.

One possible problem may be older versions of ATi drivers. I have been told installing a NEWER version of the ATi drivers over an old version does not completely remove the older version and this might be the cause of the problems.

Something people should try is to completely uninstall ATi video drivers and reinstalling a new version.

Any help in tracking down the issue is helpful. Thanks everyone, hopefully we can get the problems taken care of quickly.

if you have the ATI problem try uninstalling the drivers and installing the news ones

          then post here

I mean really, ATI cards have to make up a good percentage of cards out there. And then to even suggest that this problem was NEVER encountered in testing?
AFAIK the game wont run on any notebooks with ati chips and has problems with the 9550, some 9800 and some of the newer cards (x800? x600? dunno). so i guess its mainly an ati problem. people like me with dell notebooks may not be able to play the game at all, as dells latest driver for the atichipset is from may this year, and there wont be any newer driver versions for notebooks older than a year and ati-drivers wont work on those notebook chipsets. hooray.

Bogged down again. Another screenshot coming - it will slowly paint this, then that, then the whole screen, then split diagonally with two colors, then some texture of land, then something else...

              BAH.

Also - while it's doing this, the cursor bogs, the system bogs, but when I get focus away, system responds again.

this wont help notebook owners. ati doenst provide drivers for notebook chipsets and the manufacturers of notebooks dont update the drivers for older notebooks. firaxis should find another solution.

Oh... I could never get Civ4 to respond properly again, so I hit the X at the top right to close, and the system froze the cursor than hard booted to the BIOS. Again.

                  I am in utter disbelief...

This may be a dumb concern, but I wonder if uninstalling my current ATI drivers is going to affect me in any other areas, since I have Windows XP MCE. MCE is very touchy sometimes, and I'm wondering if the current driver is primarily for MCE.

Great, now I find this out after I have pre-ordered the game! So there is no way to run the game on a dell notebook?

What a disappointment. This game would have been fine with the same graphics as civ2 or civ3 in my opinion. It's not a graphics based game. What a waste of time.

I just hope I can get the money back that I already paid to preorder the game. If not, I will be sending it back to firaxis or 2k games or whoever the appropriate party is. I checked the system specs before the game came out and my system met all the requirements. So if the game doesn't play (which I assume it won't) it is their problem, not mine.

Venger, I had this same problem with Pirates on my fiance's Dell laptop..the exact same problem. Weird.

Make sure you let the game install all the files it wants to, especially the DirectX files. Even if you think you are up to datre, let the game do its thing. A number of my DirectX files have todays date on them, i.e. they were installed by Civ today.

                            try: rad_w2kxp_omega_2642_7z.exe

omega drivers are 3rd party drivers. they may help in some cases. reinstall direct x9c after installing those driver and reboot system.
i cant try it myself at the moment, but i've read about it in a german forum.

Figured out it wanted Disk 1 (Install) instead of Disk 2 (Play).

Gets as far as a message box that has a progress meter (the infamous cache) and a DONE box. In full screen the bar is filled and the DONE button looks like it is depressed.

I wish programs would leave cursor apperance alone...

I edited the civ4 config ini file and did ask for full screen or window. If I chose window...I get a window. Bad news is that it is black.

Turned audio off at the same time I dod ask.

good luck to all, got the Special ed. Checking out the paper, reading the manual...

                              Will post anything new later.

                              Patch?

If you did not install the directx files when installing the game it sghould be possible to install them later by running "dxsetup" located in the directx directory on the install/play CD/CD1.
If the directx version is your problem, this may help.
