Just as a sidenote, your virtual memory is way too big. With the amount of memory you have, either disabeling or setting it to 500MB is the better thing to do.
    Hehe thanks dude.

If only I could be as patient as you hehe, my fiance would be happy ...I've been waiting so long for this game, that I simply can't reward a situation where the thing won't even get to the main menu LOL. Ugh it's a downer, but I'll find something else to play, argh.

For those having problem, did you try running game in the compatibility mode, like in Win2K mode under WinXP? Also the color quality, reducing to 16bit, or if it is already 16bit, increasing to 32 bit? Another possibility would be to incremently revert back to earlier drivers, some people suggested that version 4.7 for ATI drviers works.

And a lot of people haven't had any luck whatsoever getting it to work. (See the threads on the Civ Fanatics forum)
"For it must be noted, that men must either be caressed or else annihilated; they will revenge themselves for small injuries, but cannot do so for great ones; the injury therefore that we do to a man must be such that we need not fear his vengeance." - Niccolo Machiavelli

Just talked to the EB salesperson I bought it from, and he said he's had 2 other calls about this problem (other than me obviously). Thank God they actually give refunds, I was worried they didn't. Hopefully he warns others about this problem.

I am running the game, thought very gingerly - not clicking on alot of things in a row, letting it breathe... actually have a size 3 city and am making contact with other Civs, got a promotion for a unit... running in windows mode.

I had the renderer problem with my PC (using the S3 Graphics ProSavage integrated chipset). Once I updated my driver, that problem went away.

However, I didn't get much farther. Now when I start the program,

                1) the commercial music (prior to the Civ 4 screen and the start of the Native American Yanni music) cuts in and out

                2) All of the menu and game text is replaced with vertical lines of varying thickness, rather than letters or numbers, like the font is corrupted.

                Any ideas?

Unfortunetly I know Best Buy will tell me to go **** yourself if you bring it back

I called tech support, It sounded like a bomb was going off in the background, and she was frantic (sounded hot though).

I honestly didn't think EB took stuff back, then again I've never taken anything back before. The sales guy told me to wait 48-72 more hours and see what happens in (EDIT) terms of hotfixes. I think he said they had a 7 day return policy or something, I was so ticked I wasn't really paying attention at that point.

It is unforgivable to ship a product that has a problem with ATI cards.

I mean really, ATI cards have to make up a good percentage of cards out there. And then to even suggest that this problem was NEVER encountered in testing?

What a ripoff, CIV IV leaves a bad taste before it even runs, can't wait to see what they screwed up inside.

Sorry, my technical expertise is in networking, not PC's.

I am unfamiliar with the term "T&L" in this context?

                            tutorial

i started going through the tutorial and the game told me to send my first worker to the blue circle....it happened to be a forest and then instructed me to build a farm. well apparently you cannot build a farm in the forrest. it will not let me move the worker or cut the forrest. so i am kinda stuck there, didn;t have a lot of time to see what the problem might be but it was my first observation of a bug

Did they just develope themselves out of an audience?
