I'm especially excited at the prospect of hearing Spock in my ear every ten turns!

Sounds like the reviewer had hopeless tactics in his war vs inferior civ. A bit of lemon with your G+T?

I like the idea that corruption isn't affected by distance any more - I've always liked the idea of creating dispersed overseas empires in civ, but it's usually a fruitless task.

The cities still seem to have the same unalterable grid size, which is a shame, IMO.

Well, I'll just pretend the helicopter had an equipment failure or something. As long as the odds of this are very, very low, it won't bother me. I'm more bothered, actually, by the lack of scale between knight and helicopter.

In the scheme of things, though, it's great to see Civ 4 get it's first 9+ rating!

if you see it in game mechanics it isnt
          1) the knight might have 2-3 promotions getings his combat value to 12-13
          2) the knight could be defending a terrain easily giving him 50% defence bonus
do the math and it's close to a rookie helicopter

[q=IGN reviewer]Let's get it out of the way right at the start: the only reason to stop playing Civilization IV is to tell other people just how good the game is.[/q] ok the guy is copying me
[q=teh MarkG]Well over a month after my self-made deadline I've got to admit that I find playing Civ4 more fun than writing about it. But JUST FOR YOU I dropped Civ4 to write this! [/q]

              damn i'm good

in the video, the reviewer attacks a full-health fortified knight on a hill with a damaged helicopter

this is NOT, i repeat NOT, an issue of "phalanx vs tank"...

MarkG, yeah... the knight has better um... reach... on a hill... Seriously, I hope it happens very, very seldom!

                Geomodder,
                Don't be grouchy!
Always nod and agree with me, Geomodder!
Well, ok, then +50% against all non-gunpowder units would be fair, giving the musketmen a go at the gunships. Anything is better than this!

Nah, it was the gunship's own fault, it shot so much shrapnel from the knights' armour that it collided with the gunship's engine.

                        So, not wtfpwned after all...

Having a pre-damaged helicopter certainly helps explains it. Shame the reviewer didn't make this clear. Good catch Mark.

                          9.4 - yippee. This from the site that gave MOO3 a 9.2.

Didn't they also retract that later saying something like "Sometimes we take a risk, rewarding games that hold great promise. But MOO3 ended up not delivering." I remember something like that.

Anyway, yes, the final judge of Civ 4 will, of course, be the people of Poly.

As I have said over at Civfanatics-based on their past scorings, if their score for CivIV was all I had to go on, then I admit I would have taken it with a large quantity of salt. However, the score does nothing more than reaffirm the already brilliant reviews given by a vast number of fanatical civ players in whom I greatly trust.
Also, MarkG has managed to confirm the suspicion which I also raised over at Civfanatics-namely that the gunship with which he was attacking might have been damaged-in which case he merely 'suffered an equipment malfunction' on one of his attack runs-and was forced to crash land/abandon ship (for the realism fanatics out there !) Either way, it was his own darned fault, and it strikes me as incredibly cheeky to pass off his on 'strategic incompetence' as a game-fault !

                              Yours,
                              Aussie_Lurker.

Why I think Unit X could be defeated by a Unit Y:

Combat doesn't repersent two units lining up and firing at each other until one is anhiliated (Unless X = Y and Y = Rifleman/Musketeer) it also takes into consideration things like Tactics. You know what? If a spearman got INTO a tank, do you think he would not be capible to kill the crew? You don't think he's just sitting in front of cannon thrusting his spear against the armour plating? Do you think Knights wouldn't take cover and hide from a Helicopter? Maybe they got the helicopter to crash? Maybe it came down low and they forced open the smashed the cockpit and slaughtered the pilot? Again, I doubt the knights are standing there patiently waiting for the Helicopter to unload its armaments against them.
