Well, If the tanks are up against a small horde of Spearmen, They'd most likely be using their machine guns and not their main cannon: Their hatch is most likely already open. If the got close enough then the could spear the machine gunner and ... My point is Modern weapons can do a lot but a bullet to the head can't kill you more than a spear to the head. The insertion of a tool or whatever is pretty much a death blow no matter what weapon you use.

The right conditions should allow any unit to beat any other unit, after all man's greatest weapon isn't made in factories or forges, It doesn't have ammunition and it can't be jammed or misfire. It the one we've been using all along to give us the edge to survive in nature: Our brains. There are species on the planet who are stronger and faster than us, but we've defeated them all by out thinking our opponents.

"One chance in a million, so it must work."

I think that's from one of Terry Pratchett's books, maybe "Guards, Guards".
I've allways wanted to play "Russ Meyer's Civilization"

okay, if what Solver says is true, then I have more confidence in how the combat system works...

but about my reaction (or overreaction ), I was basing it on the whole "combat rating" thing... I don't know how the combat model in Civ4 works. When I see those ratings... 10 for knight and 20 for helicopter, I just see knight is half as powerful as helicopter... to me that says, in battles, knight has a somewhat decent chance (given some favorable circumstances) to defeat a helicopter.

I know that balance is important to a game. But I don't want a game to sacrifice basic common sense for balance's sake. A guy on a horse with a sword is not going to defeat a helicopter gunship.... EVER. Period. Sure, there could be some freak accident. But in a battle, the knight is never going to win.

okay... now that I got all that out of my system... all I can do is just wait for the game and see how all of this has been implemented.

I must just play it for myself.

To us, it is the BEAST.

Knight's killing helicopters isn't suprising, I mean they kill dragons all the time. They just lured the heli out of its cave then charged it in order to save the Princess...

I realise the numbers may seem strange, a helicopter is more than twice powerful than a Knight in real life, but in Civ4 terms, double the strength means that the unit will never lose. Even 6 vs. 4 is very much in favour of the 6-strength unit.

Strengh seems to be not just offense but also FIREPOWER. People who remember civ2, shall know that firepower is extremely powerfull. The howitzer unit of civ2 had 3 firepower(while most other units had only 2), it was extremely powerfull and is actually one of the big reasons why many people still hate railroads(if you combined that unit with railroads could you take over an entire civilization in 1 turn). That was the result of only 1 extra firepower. Copters have TEN extra firepower compared to knights in civ 4

                and well, he said: NEE..

thats effective vs. copters and tanks.

                  I agree, I'm now pre-ordering the game.

Given what we've heard, it may be reasonable to think of the combat strengths in terms of a log rather than linear scales

There were reports of battalions of NVA firing rifles en masse at jets during the air defense of Hanoi and bringing some down including a B52 (that one may be folklore though).

Ok, now that's settled, let's talk about Caesar's salad

So I guess the key here is that the strength scale is non-linear, such that 20 is effectively much more than twice 10, in the case of Heli vs. Knight.

And so the Knight will effectively never win.

And so we are all happy little bunnies, running in the fields of Civ4...

And the conclusion is: the IGN reviewer was very 'economical' with the truth, and more than a little misleading...

yeah but they weren't throwing spears!

small arms bringing down a B52 over Hanoi? I think not...
