For me the most important part to fix in civ4 is that the tech three from the discovery of gunpowder (around 1300) to tanks and flights (around 1910) goes far to fast compared to the other ages.

Isnt' it weird that the screenshot show you can build experts in the colonies whereas in Colonisation you had to import them from the Old World or get them evolve from a non expert craftsman?
Shouldn't expert be a bit more of a promotion or somethign rather than a separate unit??

But a new Col is certainly like xmas for me! What a game the original was, let us just hope they dont remove the micromanagement, which in my opinion was the most fun part of this game.

Im almost starting to hope for a new imperialism game as well...

Well, you could build a University and use your existing experts to train your regular colonists.

But the expert planters, trappers, and fishermen needed to be trained in the Native Villages.

            Delaying Civ5 w00t

I think we need more time to enjoy Civ4. It isn't like Civ3 that we were ready to move on once it came out. Civ4 has some serious staying power. I'd personally like to enjoy the game for another year or two before moving on to something new. With Warlords and BTS there was always something new to come along and change things, never a nice plateau to refine what we have.

There was all sorts of great mods that were made for Vanilla Civ4. Then they all became obsolete when Warlords came out. Then more great mods were created, and now they're gone too. Lets have some time to catch up and enjoy what we've got.

Either way I'm a big fan of the original Colonization, so I'll be glad to see this come out.

Isn't it weird that in Civ4 you don't use hammers for unit upkeep, like you used shields in Civ1, but gold instead?

Actually this is compeltley different. This is not col 2. Its a stand alone expansion pack for civ4. Its only appeal is how close to the original col it can get otherwise people can just play the many good fan made new world mods.

But we all know that won't happen.
It might if EA manages to succeed in taking over 2K.

Of course, then we might see CivIV : 2009 Madden Total War NFL Hero.

                        Excellent news.

I must admit that I would have preferred to see this billed as "Colonization II" rather than a Civilization title, but there might be purely commercial reasons for this. I'm not sure whether they are sound - after all, some people might not realize that it's a stand-alone game rather than an expansion - but the title alone is no reason to worry that we might be dealing with little more than an expensive Civ4 mod.

The official announcement - "reimagining" is a buzz-word these days, isn't it? - does not have a lot of information about the game mechanics, but I would say that the apparent focus on just four (hopefully very distinctive) colonial powers is a good sign that any let's-just-throw-in-more tendencies have not been given in to. I'll be keen to learn whether the distinctive features of Colonization have been maintained:
                        - the much more detailed economic system
                        - the relatively static technological environment (no advance tree)
                        - the distinctive character of the Indian tribes
                        - the relatively simple combat mechanics (interestingly, the original Colonization at a single strength statistic before Civ4 adopted that simplification for the Civ series to make room for promotion)
                        - the climactic endgame (declaration of independence)

There were lots of features in the original begging for improvement and I am sure that a lot of things have been changed from the original, but I am also confident that the designers have been careful to make the new game different enough from Civ4 to escape the "this is just a mod" verdict that they are almost inviting with the title.

If not, the original Colonization (DOS version) is still there to be enjoyed. I may not have played it as frequently as Civ2 or SMAC, but it has not lost its appeal. In fact, I'm certain that I will set sail to find "a new life, a new beginning ... a new world!" a few more times before the new version is out.

P.S.: I hope that they are a little bit more cautious with system requirements this time around.
P.P.S.: Was there ever a Colonization democracy or succession game? I looked in the archives, but I might have missed something.

That would be a fun way to get into the mood for the new release (particulary given that Colonization strategy has never been discussed as exhaustively as Civ strategy).

I'm too busy a work at the moment to assume any organizational responsibilties, but I would be happy to participate in the discussions and even play a turnset now and then.

This is effectively new take on Colonization, not Col1: Remastered. And using Civ4 engine doesn't mean it's yet another New World mod.

But its sitll not Col2, and I actually hope it is Col1: Remastered since otherwise I fear it will be just a very extensive proffesionally made mod.

I would be very happy with a col 1,5.
