    Why wouldn't it be Col2?

It's just an engine, one I'm sure is being fairly modified to suit Col designs.

I think the only reason to use the Civilization 4 name is for marketing. Hardly anyone remembers Col1 anymore, so they need to link it to a quality product. Civ4 becomes the link, and doubly so because of the engine.

But don't think for ONE second that just because it uses the Civ4 engine that it's NOT Col2. I think we will be pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

"Soren formula" is only really good way to go (33% old, 33% improved. 33% new). Too much old, stagnation, too much new, well... not Colonization.

No it is not Colonization 2. And you are wrong about the marketing. Colonization 2 would sell, just as Pirates did and that game was just as old. If anything Colonization 2 sounds waaay better than the current title. But they aren't making that, they are making just what the bloody title says
Civ4: Col a stand alone expansion. Are people so unfamiliar with the concept of such expansions?

And Dale this has nothing to do with the graphics engine. Two games sharing the same graphics engine does not make them the same game (I mean really how many FPS are that do just that), saying that this is a new addtion to the civ4 world is! (damn dude if this was about marketing they would call it Civilization: Colonization).

Does anyone here rember the Civ2 mod that came with the game? Moo2 Junior? Now imagine the developers decided not to use it in the in the expansion but to develop it and publish it as Civilzation 2: Master of Orion 2.

That would be comparble to C4C.

            # Civilization 4 uses the same 3D engine (Gamebryo) used in Sid Meier's Pirates!, which allows players to zoom smoothly from world map levels down to features in individual cities.
See? This is not about the game engine.

What makes you say that have they said so? Does Sid hate sci-fi? AC did well I thought and is still played. If he is going to remake colonization which didn't do that well originally and is much older he should give AC a sequel just as a business decision.

But you do realise that EA has been holding the rights hostage for the past n years right?

EA currently owns the rights to the title "Alpha Centauri", not Firaxis. This creates the situation where Firaxis / Take2 would have to obtain permission (and ultimately pay a premium for) to use the rights to publish a sequel.

Considering the current situation between Take2 and EA I very much doubt that an agreement will occur. The two have been in stand-off mode regarding a number of titles for years, and SMAC is one of them.

According to Brian Reynolds, the rights are split threeways:

Ha ha! Alpha Centauri has I suspect been kind of trapped in "Triple IP Voodoo Purgatory". I think the IP itself probably still belongs to Electronic Arts; the right-to-develop probably still belongs to Firaxis where most of the artists still work plus the current "Civ team" and Civ4 engine; and substantially all of the original designers/programmers/writers who created the "world" now work at Big Huge. So it would be kind of like trying to put the Beatles back together (though at least no one's dead), and THEN you could deal with the question of whether there'd be a big enough market for it to make it worthwhile.

I suppose if the powers-that-be perceived enough of a market for it, then Firaxis (i.e. Take Two) and EA could unwind the IP rights and do some kind of follow-on with the Civ4 engine. My guess is don't hold your breath. It would be interesting to see though... if they go for it my advice to them is hire a designer/writer with a philosophy degree!

the question isnt would it sell, the question is would it sell as well as under the Civ name. Given the momentum the Civ name after Civ4, I imagine thats a better marketing tool than colonization 2.

But why call it civ4? Why not just call it Civ: col? It sounds much better.
