  • Marketing... it's all marketing, Hera. Civ4 was a successful game, so they will sell Col with the words "Civ4" before it, hoping to sell more copies. I think they hope to get two groups:
    1. Fans of Colonization who don't care what words are before or after it (a relatively small group, unfortunately)
    2. People who play Civ4 and think it's an expansion.

It's a win-win, as long as 1.) doesn't get scared off by the "Civ4:" before it, which they probably won't (as the serious fans will research it and know better). The main thing is they probably have to put out a demo to make it clear to the real fans that it's still Col at heart (which I'd be shocked if they don't, as they have done demos of most other games).

    • But what if it isn't Col at heart?

People I am a big Col fan and there is no way in hell that I will ever accept Civ4:Col as Col2 as some of you try to paint it.

      • Perhaps you should wait to play it (or at least a demo) before you make your decision?

          I will play it.

And then I'll gloat about being right.

I'm not saying it won't be fun, I'm just saying that it is by no stretch of the imagination Col2.

          • I hardly doubt it would be just Civ4 scenario in new world.

They would not put name Colonization, if they don't want to port at least some mechanics from original Colonization to a new game.

            • To chip in on the naming issue, I think it's quite clear: they want to cash in on the successful Civ4 name or they would have called it Col2. Also, it will be apparent (and perhaps more so than in most games) that the engine is the same.

I find myself wondering about price points. Though having said that it will be totally irrelevant unless they finish Civ4 BtS first.

I believe the number of more casual players who are looking for "something new" at this point is substantial. I'm not sure why it is sound marketing to disguise the fact that the new release is "something new" (which is what I hope and suspect). Of course, if we are dealing with another great expansion to Civ4 (which isn't a bad thing in itself), the title is perfectly fine.

P.S.: snoopy369, I'm afraid this thread is not the perfect place to check whether there is enough interest in a Col1 succession game. If you were serious, you might want to start new thread to see whether enough people would participate to make it fun.
This is very true, people who liked civ4 but are looking for something different may be put off by the title.

                      Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword
                      Civilization IV: Colonization

If it's a marketing trick to call it like that, then it's the worst marketing trick ever! Trying to sell a total new game by making it sound like it's an expansion to an 5 years old game.

Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization is the latest game in the Civilization IV series, a standalone expansion pack that focuses on the Age of Discovery and Colonization in the New World. Though it uses Civ4's game engine, it will not require Civ4 or any of its expansion packs to be installed. In anticipation of its fall 2008 release date, Firaxis has published a Colonization page on its website that contains more information and details about the game, including these features:
