4th edition allows spell casters to use spells consistently, although the magic is no more powerful than any other attack. It's more interesting than the old, cast a spell, then pull out your crossbow, bs. A mage should use magic, end of story.

Besides, it never really had a rock-paper-scissors feel. It was just "Save that spell until you need it, use a stick to fight until then".

Dragon Age is not D&D anymore.

It's not really about saving spells, it's about memorizing those that have the best chances of working in all situations, given your party. Most enemies in BG1/2 can be hacked through with your fighters. You only need the mages against the bosses, really. Which is kind of consistent with the game set. D&D 2nd edition specifies that spellcasters are a rarity and that they use their powers parcimoniously. I don't know how that has evolved since, though.

The problem with 2nd edition was that being a spell caster was about as much fun as herpes. Rare magic works well in literature, like in LotR, where it can increase tension and help the reader relate to most of the characters. In a game it just cripples a character without making things any more fun. I'm looking forward to Dragon Age.

You are entitled to your own opinion.

Spellcasters have a lot of options in 2nd edition IMO.

People have had fun soloing a sorcerer. Alternatively, dual and multiclasses mages were a lot of fun.

Failing multiclass, even a pure wizard can be great. It's kind of cool from a role-playing perspective that the mage won't be doing much work, while at the same time knowing that he's necessary to beat certain villains.

2nd edition PnP does have the same feel. The wizard is always the 'cute' PC who doesn't do much, except of course when he saves your ass with the right spell. Or when he reaches a good level and starts crafting enchanted items.

It works okay with parties; it utterly fails for single played characters. Perhaps it works better in p+p RPGs where the story development is most of the fun; but for a CPRG, you need to keep the player interested. I think a reasonable solution would be a spellcaster who has a few small spells he can use regularly - say, magic missile - but must save his real spells.

And I think 4th ed sucks for the most part.

If it is going to be a magic focused universe, then it should have really cool magic, like I have heard Mage has.

In almost no story is a mage just the same as some fighter but with special effects rather then a sword.

              It is utter crap.

Yeah. DA:O has been on my must-get list for quite a while.

Baldur's Gate 3 by any other name is still Baldur's Gate 3.

I'm started to get excited about this. No D&D, but I think that's ok. It may take a little more to get into the story and the setting, but Bioware is good enough at RPG's it should be easy. They are probably saving money on the license, and they have enough rep. that they can get away with making a whole new game world and people will buy it. No real need to set it in Fearun.

I wish they had more "classes" though. But maybe the official web site has more info. But I dislike digging for useful stuff. So much of official websites are just "fluff" and no real substance.

While there might be a physics engine that applies to the jugs, I doubt that an entire engine was written specifically for the funbags. - Cyclotron - debating the pressing issue of boobies in games.

It does look good - going to be a busy few months with Forza 3, Modern Warfare 2, Mass Effect 2 and this.
