Other observations:
With 3 exclusives in one month, Socom/LBP/Motorstorm, PS3 hardware failed to move.
Wii Music bombed. Thank God.

I still find the insane Wii HW sales and the insanely low Wii SW sales very amusing.

Top ten lists don't necessarily equal software sales.
1. Long legs of titles that don't make the top ten anymore.
2. Lots of "shovelware" or niche titles that never make the top ten, but amount for considerable sales
3. Software that IS on the list but that Real Gamers don't count, cause its not "Games" eg Wii Fit.
Not to mention software that is never a sale, cause it bundled with the console - IE Wii Sports.
BTW, my congrats to Peter Molyneaux who has finally lived up to the hype, rather more so that another famous ambitious game designer did this year.

Yes, that was really good to see. I remember playing a lot of his games and they were all of the "ooh, such a good concept! But missing just that little crucial bit in execution!"
My roomie's playing Fable 2 and has just completed it. And I've just completed Fallout 3.
About Sony re-thinking it's PS2(yes not 3!) strategy in the wake of the credit crunch.
Interesting idea, and maybe not a bad one - now if they just dropped it's price in relation to the current gen(a new PS2 is still around £100 in the uk!) to make it much more attractive.......could be good?
Also devs like the PS2, especialy over the PS3 which is difficult AND expensive to develope on in comparison.......and many have yet to really grasp it and produce outstanding games(the 360 had a clear head start here).
The comments were also interesting, and i have to agree with the first one that it does sound like Sony spinning it like they are doing us a favour and we should be thankfull for this cheaper older tech? I suspect, and looking at the figures that due to the dissapointment of the PS3, and a bleakish outlook for it in hard times, they see the PS2 as vital for their profit margins.
I'm cool with that if it means some decent new games for the PS2, but I hope they drop the price of hardware and software to reflect it's last-gen status. Then it's a win-win for everyone this xmas?

I only spent 10 seconds searching and I found a new PS2 for £80 on Amazon.
Having said that they will have to cut the price further if they want to sell more PS2s now that you can get a budget (arcade SKU) 360 for £100, which is clearly superior.

never thought about looking to buy one on-line...........was that a brand new one for £80? I was basing my £100 on the high street store prices, brand new etc.
The hardware is 'clearly superior' re 360, but i would argue the gaming 'quality' in terms of variety and range is 'clearly superior' on PS2, and if Sony feel they have to support it further then that is great news for the best console platform of all time.......clearly
The gaming quality of the PS2 is okay, there's some good games. But it was last generation's Wii.
If you want to play lots of outstanding games, 360 is where to be.

£80 new, as I said - it would take you two seconds to check it out.
No real point debating it of course but the second point isn't true unless you play so many games that the depth in certain PS2 genres (like JRPGs, which I think you like) began to bite. It'd take most people a year now to get through all the good 360 games.
Even if you only focus on the genres where the 360 has traditionally been weak, like RPGS, there's Lost Odyssey which is better than any of the PS2 JRPGs I've seen, Oblivion which I don't like but lots do. There's Tales of Vesperia, again a last gen style game which you seem to like, just it's done better. Most recently there's Fable 2 and Fallout 3, which a lot of 'Poly folk who don't like RPGs on consoles are raving about.
p.s. i'm very happy with my latest console thanks (my PS2)
I appreciate the link I guess, but damn if that **** isn't obvious.
Check out the Beyond3D NPD threads for real insight.
That article misses some obvious stuff -- like how the Wii's "hit game" cycles is aimed towards the first half of this year, while the 360's is in the last quarter. The "year to date" graphs are going to look very different by the end of September with all of the software the 360 has in this quarter. But we don't expect serious analysis from Gamasutra, do we.
