  • You got a point there about the possibility of it being captured. It seemed odd that the Americans wouldn't be willing to equip you with a Gauss rifle as one of the standard kits. And I totally missed them on the propaganda posters. Even in the wiki that picture just kind of looks like an M16 clone, although thinking about that for a second makes me realize how silly that is.

That Fallout wiki has really grown over the past few months. I guess the release of G.E.C.K. made a lot of information easier to find.

    • What´s the ant-lady of canterbury commons called in the english version? I just wonder if there was equally subtile word-play at work in the original version. In german she is the ´Ameisterin´, where ´Ameise´ means ant and ´Meisterin´ means female master.

Overall the localization (translation) of this game might be the best ever done in a game, i must say. Most of you guys probably dont know this, but the whole radio is in german, too, and, frankly, if i ran a radio-station in RL, i´d really try to get that 3-dogs-chap to moderate my youth-program - he is really good. John Henry Edens babbling? All translated in top notch quality. The only minor thing is, that there seemed a bit of a lack of voices for the NPCs, especially the kids. This reminds me of one detail, that first disturbed me, but after thinking about it, i figured to be allright: The kid in Canterbury Commons at one point talks about the mechanists former life and that he used to be a hero of the working class. The proper translation would be ´Arbeiterklasse´ (´worker class´) and thats the word in the subs, but the kids says ´Arbeitsklasse´ (´work class´). The reason is probably a mis-read by the dubbing kid, who didnt know the proper term. First i thought: ´Reason for another take´, but then again, how would a kid of that age, 200 years after a nuclear holocaust, know any better than the kid that dubbed him in RL today? So, after all, a good decision to leave it like that...

EDIT: I guess they learned from their mistakes in Oblivion, which was probably the game with the worst german localization ever - upto to the point of near unplayability.

      • She's the Antagonizer in English. A similar pun to Ameisterin, but a bit more layered.

Good to know they did a bang up job on the localization.

          • bump from the past. Got this from my brother, so far glad I didn't buy it because I can't get it to run.

The main obstacle is xlive. I can't install xlive without the service packs. I can't install the service pack on an unauthorized copy of windows. And I can't play fallout 3 without xlive. Even though it's a single player game.

Anyways there used to be an old xlive dll floating around according to some places, but I can't find it. I found a windows for games live disabler, but that doesn't work. It says it cannot find the fallout.ini file. there is no dll in that rar file. I'm not sure how to get fallout3 to see I have xlive (without actually having it). Anyone have any tips?

                  • last resort.

I was able to get past the missing dll message by running mod manager which has a provision for the dll. And I could even run windows for game disabler after that.

Now starting the game does nothing.

it's a legitimate store bought copy of the game.

Nope, but I heard it's got all sorts of bug problems and has crashed people's XBoxes.

                          • I expect it will be the usual short, rushed, overpriced DLC, but would be happy to be proved wrong.

                              • I played 'The Pitt' a bit last night, after the GF had left for her house, and it's pretty interesting. I voluntarily left all my equipment before heading out, and I don't regret it, as it makes it a bit more of a challenge. The story is really interesting, but I won't spoil it...

The only bug I've come across so far (PC) is the new weapon (a kind of chainsaw with a rotating blade on one end) which disappears when you wield it in first-person view (it still works, only a graphical glitch), and if viewed in third-person only the blade disappears.
