  • I don't like how fast it changes from day to night, anyway to adjust it in some ini file or something?

    • How long have you guys all played thus far, especially people who have beaten it? I'm about 37 hours in and level 20 now. I still have ~10 active quests and probably many more to do. Been to most places in DC, and mapped out all the subway basically. Still tons of places out in the wastes I haven't been to.

        • I've put in about 65 hours. I hit level 20 very early on, because I was into all the side quests. The game becomes less about survival and more about doing what you want to do, on your own terms.

I liked a load of the side quests. The appearance of one particular ghoul from both Fallout and Fallout 2 was very welcome.

All in all, I had very few troubles with glitches. It froze on me only once, and I only had one person die randomly when I needed him for a quest. That having been said, these are elementary playtesting concerns and they should have ironed them out. The design has a few carryover issues which were present in both preceding Fallout games (not all your skills and perks will be equally useful, etc.) but all in all this game is a very accomplished and faithful evolution of the two prior games.

I also did some research on the cancelled "Van Buren" project, which was going to be Fallout 3 a few years back before the dev team got laid off and their work consigned to a stillborn file somewhere. Very sad reading, all in all. But there is hope that Van Buren could still be made. Nothing in Fallout 3 actively contradicts the plot of Van Buren, and it takes place in a different area too.

The ending of FO3 is especially bittersweet. It's less of the "parades and fireworks" of FO2 and much more of the "take the good with the bad" of FO1.

(Of course I've only beaten the game as a Good player. Bing will have to tell me how he finds the Evil ending. He's just started the game and in his first visit to Megaton he's already killed the Sheriff, the barkeeper, and he's running around town with a Combat Shotgun killing people off. He will probably not complete the game with a positive Karma, all things considered.)

            • I've only got around 12 hours game time logged so far, but all but two of my game sessions ended with CTDs. Not surprising since my video card is below specs, but it does mean I occasionally lose some progress.

              • I already had a CTD as well.
We're sorry, the voices in my head are not available at this time. Please try back again soon.

                • I only had two lockups and one CTD in over 40 hours of play. There seems to be the usual variance in problems reported. The game doesn't like something in your system, and no real way of telling what it is.

                    • I've had a half dozen CTDs or so, one of which was a 'known problem location' that was repeatable (just west of Fort Independence), others were probably random. I suspect a couple were related to asking it to do things that were not error-trapped properly (not a video problem at all, but actually a program logic issue), like not exiting the repair screen cleanly and such. Not too bad, really, in about 40 hours of playing.

                      • Remember M'aiq in Oblivion? The Kajhit whose "rumors" were Bethesada's way of mocking their forum-going critics?

I made some for Fallout 3.

                        ...
"I met this crazy guy a while back. Had an old pre-war camera on a pole above his head, and some display in front of his face. I asked him why, and he said that he was supposed to see the world in third-person, not with his own eyes. Strange, huh?"
                        ...
"Couple days ago, I saw a lady attacking a statue in DC. Seriously! It was that little one to one of the pre-war Presidents... Howard, I think it was. I calmed her down a bit, and she told me that it was wrong, that it was supposed to be of some guy named Van Buren. I made the mistake of asking her why she thought that, and she got all mad and went back to wailing on the thing. She's prolly still there, heh."
                        ...
"About six months ago, I encountered a strange raider. He took a shot at me, and I ducked underneath some cover. Long story short, I realized that he would only shoot me after I did. Hell, I could leave cover, wave at him, and he'd do nothing until I shot. He got mad when I shot him before he could take a shot, though. Died screaming about His Turn or something."
                        ...
"Me and a few people got a poll going on what President Eden is. 30 caps that he's a alien, 10 caps that he's a slimy mutant, and 50 caps that he's a robot. you in?"
                        ....
"Unlike most people around here, I don't complain about Bloatflies. They aren't as annoying as some other creatures I've had the misfortune of dealing with. There was this one featherless bird thing... aw, I can tell you don't care."
                        ...
"I keep hearing people say war never changes. That's bull****, frankly. 200 years ago, we lobbed atomic bombs at each other. Yesterday, I hit a 8 foot tall supermutant with a nail board. I'd say that's different."
                        ...
"I palled around with this ghoul for a while. Told me he was around since before the War, and he kept telling me a joke that didn't make much sense to me. I mean, how can the War have happened just because a Yao Guai won a game in the same year that a baby Yao Guai won a game? doesn't make sense."
                        ....
"I found a page from a really old book a while back. Just a bunch of symbols I couldn't understand. But that's not the best part! The more I looked at it, the worse my vision got. Where is it, you ask? Well, it did a number on the eyes on my face, but it works fine for my Brown eye..."

                        • Actually there was an Easter Egg in Fallout 2 where a load of Unwashed Villagers were beating up on a poor defenceless guy. They spouted random lines that were drawn from a real-life flaming on the Black Isle gaming forums before the game was released.

                              • BULL**** ASHER. BULL****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't listen to Asher, Dis; I probably don't need to tell you that by now though.

Here's what happens when Dis buys an XBox 360:
                                ====================================

Dis walks to the local computer store to purchase his brand new Xbox, wow a few choices to choose from, he thinks the added HDD will do him some good, so he goes for it.

Dis heads home, oh wait, still got to buy that game, don't forget, Piracy on Xbox, very difficult. More money gone, never mind, Dis is very wealthy. Dis goes home, sets up his XBox 360 and is very happy with how easy it all was. (Assuming Dis's TV supports the video requirements!). So now Dis is happily playing Fallout 3, using VATS all the time of course. Dis begins to wonder what it would be like if he didnt have to use VATS all the time and risk getting killed so easily. OH WELL.

Months later, Dis is bored of Fallout 3 and wants to play another game. Oh but that costs more money, quite a lot actually. Nevermind, lets see what else I can do with the Xbox, watch movies? I can do that without an Xbox. Play music? I can also do that without an XBox. Download demo's? Boring. Dis wants the full game.

                                Dis is sad.

                                The end.

Here's what happens when Dis buys a PC:
                                ==============================

Dis goes to shop, and see's all the amazing choices he has, so many choices, its scary, he can go for a really cheap one or a really expensive one, so many pro's and con's, wow, Dis see's one that comes with a free printer. He likes it. Dis makes sure his new PC is able to play Fallout 3 of course. The PC sets him back quite a bit, but he's excited.

Dis rushes home to set up his PC. Oh, but wait, Dis forgot to buy Fallout 3. Oh never mind, Dis can just download it; saving some extra money and avoiding the cd-check at the same time. Perfect!

Dis is very happy with his PC, he's playing Fallout 3, both VATS and sometimes without VATS when Dis feels like showing off his skills.

Months later, Dis is bored with Fallout 3 and decides to play another game. He goes online, via a browser of his choice, and downloads whatever he wants, full, for free. While waiting for the download, Dis is happily enjoying himself through many various porn sites and discussion sites. Dis also keeps himself up dated with the latest news, and watching the latest TV show before they air in his country.

Dis sells his TV the next day.

Months and months later, Dis finds out that Bethesda releases a modding tool for Fallout 3. Dis loves to mod! Dis begins to mod all parts of Fallout 3, releasing a co-op mod, which makes Dis famous. Years later, Dis has started a career in game design.

Dis is very happy and successful. Thanks PC!

Meanwhile, poor little Jimmy down the street is broke with only 5 Xbox games from 3 years ago. Jimmy is not so happy anymore.
And Agathon still thinks he's in the future with his Mac. Poor brainwashed Apple users.

                                The end.
