  • The primary method of determining a hostile individual is if the pull a gun when they see you.

Now, aside from that there are a few other ways. First, certain things are always hostile: raiders, feral ghouls, super mutants, vicious dogs, yao guai, mole rats, radscorpions, all wandering robots, deathclaws and such. If you see those, you are going to have to fight them or avoid them. You can use the VATS system to identify anything you see from a distance; you don't have to engage with it.

When you get closer, mobs have a bar that shows up in your compass. It's a green bar if they're (currently) well intentioned, red if they're hostile. Your "crosshairs" turn red when over a foe as well, if it's within effective range of your weapon.
Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

      • Old, used, and worn out.

Seriously, there are a few different skills, and each one controls a certain number of weapon types.

Small Guns handles all the pistols, SMGs, rifles, and assault rifles.

Big Guns handles things like the Fat Man, Minigun, and maybe the Gatling Laser.

Energy Weapons handles the laser and plasma pistols/rifles.

Melee Weapons handles all the larger hand-to-hand weapons.

Unarmed handles basic fisticuffs and weapons like brass knuckles and the power fist.

Explosives controls grenades, mines, and the missile launcher.

Most of the weapons in the game are leftovers from prior to the war, or post-war production by the Brotherhood of Steel or the Enclave. A few are more mad scientist creations, a la Deadlands. If you have a schematic, you can take the proper components and build a weapon at a workbench.

There's the Dart Gun (made from a paint gun, toy car, surgical tubing, and a radscorpion poison gland; it shoots darts), the Railway Rifle (made from a crutch, steam gauge assembly, pressure cooker, and a fission battery; it shoots rail spikes), the Rock-It Launcher (made from a leaf blower and other things I'm forgetting; it shoots junk that you pick up so it's unlimited ammo), the Shiskebab (lawn mower blade, motorcycle handbrake, motorcycle gas tank, it's a flaming sword), Bottlecap Mine (lunchbox, cherry bomb, sensor module, and 10 bottlecaps; it's a land mine), Nuka-Grenade (tin can, Abraxo Cleaner, Nuka-Cola Quantum, turpentine; it's a super hand grenade) and I'm probably missing one or two.

Even these, when made, are worn. All weapons and armor wear out; every time they're hit or used for an attack, the take some condition damage. As their condition degrades, their effectiveness drops down. You can repair them yourself if you have another matching item you can use for parts, which basically means you pull a Tuco (making one good weapon from multiple bad ones). You can also pay certain NPCs to repair items for you. However, both have limits. The maximum level an item can be repaired to is based on your Repair skill level, and also items in really good condition can't be used to repair another item if it's beyond your Repair skill. Most NPCs have low Repair skills, so paying them to do it saves you parts but doesn't work as well as doing it yourself with a good skill.

In the screenshots I have posted up above, I got my combat armor to 32 DR by repairing it. The best NPC I've found could only get it to 24 DR.

            • GT you should put a super mutant avatar on your Poly profile. When I saw them they reminded me of trolls.

              Big, bad-ass, nasty, chaingun-wielding trolls.

                • Ok, finally made it to where I am leaving, lol, kept hearing this chomping and finally figured out those roaches were chomping on me.

I restarted at where I left Amata, took her jumpsuit as she lay on floor, strangely aroused at her laying crumpled on floor, but thats another storyline...............

Took out Officer richards and Obrien...

Gonna grab some chow and get back into finding out how to get out of here.........

That really helped me, learning early on.

Just curious, is eating a bunch of radmeat good for you?

Looks like a great game here

                    • It's pretty much the same with all meat: heals you a bit and adds a bit of radiation. Obviously, a lot of radiation == bad. But it's not too easy to get irradiated, so meat is okay for healing.

                          • Do your allies (Dogmeat and human pals) suffer from radiation? Should I tell them to wait outside before going into an irradiated place?

Also, I can heal my friends by giving them stimpacks, but this doesn't heal location specific damage. Can I heal their limbs, torso, and head?

                            • Plus, Grandpa, there are options for dealing with radiation and other methods of healing too. Stimpacks are the best, but until you're overflowing with them I'd save them for when really necessary. Water is better than meat most of the time. If you find a water fountain you can get 24 health for 5 rads. Nuka-cola will give you 10 health for 2 rads. Mirelurk meat will give you 20 health for 2 rads, but you have to kill mirelurks (think giant anthropomorphic crabs) to get it. There's an even rarer softshell mirelurk meat that gives 30 health for 2 rads, but only the mirelurk hunters and kings drop it, and they're even tougher. If you do the first quest for Moira in the Craterside Supply store in Megaton, she'll give you a food sanitizer that increases the health benefit of food by 20% as long as you carry it.

For dealing with radiation, you can take Rad-Away to lower your current rad count. The amount varies with your Medicine skill, so the higher it is the more it'll do. Just like stimpacks, they can be rare at the beginning, but fortunately you should be taking far less radiation than you are damage. You can also pay a doctor in any town that has one to heal crippled limbs, heal damage, or de-rad you, but that costs money.

Finally, there are the house upgrades. The upgrade "My First Infirmary" is expensive, but worth every penny in the long run. If you have one, any time you're at the house you can use it to do anything a doctor could do, without paying any more money. So, it can fully restore all damage you've taken, fully restore all crippled limbs you have, and remove all accumulated radiation. The Nuka-Cola machine is also pretty neat, and cheaper. You put Nuka-Cola into it, and it turns them into Ice Cold Nuka-Cola, which still gives you 2 rads when you drink it but restores 20 health instead of 10.
Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

Ok, should I be lowering (I think) the wg?/something

                                also, I been drinking cola,eating meat,anyfood I can

or should I have been saving?

                                One other thing

I went to Super duper Mart, went back to ctaer side supply, wasnt that where Moira was?

I went back (IIRC, its besides Moriatu's) but door is locked?

This is, EXACTLY the kind of game I was looking for, although am happy wioth Guild Wars, this was what I was searching for
