    • Is that a location identified on the map? I had no on-map icon for where I found him, though I may have missed the trigger line for it to show.

        Spoiler:
        The Scrapyard?

That's where I found him. He died, though.

        • Why would you let the dog die, you can just send him away if it gets dangerous, can't you?

            • Haven't actually found a partner yet Hopefully that will not be long. Nearly at the stage in the game where I suspect that stuff will start happening ... level 7 IIRc.

              • Ah yes. Then I must have missed the actual place I have to walk into for the marker to show on the map. Nice to see that I stumbled onto it randomly, though

Sure, if you do it in advance. In this particular case, he and I were travelling in the wilderness (I was bound for one of the sites that got a shipment of Nuka-Cola Quantum, but this was before I got there) when we were attacked by a group of Talon mercs. In the course of the fight, a wrecked car exploded, and Dogmeat was fighting one of the mercs right next to it when it blew. Neither survived.

                  • In real life I work in the shadow of the U.S. Senate in D.C. and I can see the Washington Monument from the top floor of my office. I finally got to see them in-game too.

                    Spoiler:
It was pretty cool to see the National Archives, and the Senate, and the Monument, all still standing after the atom bomb hit. But at the same time it was also rather disappointing and depressing to find absolutely nothing of worth in them. None had survived the depredations of time, and the only things still in them were Raiders and Mutants fighting over the scraps. Good in a poetic way but I guess part of me expected the designers to leave a little something behind...

I'm at level 12 now and making my way through the ruins of D.C. Right now I have been trying to get to Rivet City and I can see it physically but I don't know how to gain access, so I'm taking a break and just trawling around D.C.'s ruins.

I can confirm that the Talons still keep coming even after you massacre all their top leaders.

Same here, but then I prefer to work alone. I remember in Fallout 2 the partners just kept annoying me

                      • There are certain spots where the partners aren't optional. Normally I'm with you, I prefer to work alone (I'm a sneak, and they keep engaging in combat). However, it doesn't always work out that way.

                        • Not optional? As in you can't go to those places solo, or it's just hard?

You can still get rid of them after those certain spots, right? Like they just follow you into battle or whatever, then when the mission is over the leave?

                            • Those are quests where you wind up tied to a partner. And yes, after it's over the partner goes away. Sometimes it's not so bad, at least one of them the partner would sneak when I sneaked, but wasn't as good as it as I was. So if the partner got spotted, they engaged in combat. Also, in at least one of them the partner can die without the quest failing. I'll spoiler the specifics:

                              Spoiler:
In a couple of the main quests, you're tied to certain members of the Brotherhood. They can't really die, though, and it's not very long.

In another quest, you've gone to rescue certain people from super mutants. After you get them out, the quest goal changes to escorting them back home. While it might be possible to just fast travel, in my experience they don't fast travel with you and might die on the way.

In yet another quest you find someone else going after the same goal. However, since your goal isn't related to this partner it doesn't matter if the partner survives. After the quest is over, you can take that partner on if you want for other quests.

I've finished a quest like that, where I took out the police station for mutants, then resqued Red and some other guy, when outside I did a quick-travel back and both followed
