These vids have really changed my opinion on F3.
I'm now looking forward to the game.

I have a confession to make. I never played Xcom. I'm ashamed, but life goes on.Originally posted by El_Cid

What I really hate is awful camera controls, or controls that get in the way of gaming, you know your trying to see a certain building from a certain angle but each time the mouse moves 1mm it starts to swing that perspective around. I hate fighting with drifting camera angles, it's worse than being drunk
As far as the others, 4X games should be isometric, they work well as computerized board games. I get really bugged by the 3D engine in GalCiv 2 for example. RTSs generally are easier isometric, but it depends on how terrain features are implemented. For instance, if you can hide guys "behind" a tree and make them essentially invisible, that's kind of silly.
Diablo could be better with a 3D engine. Mythos, when it existed, demonstrated this well. I think that games that operate on a human scale should give more camera control, while games that operate on a strategic scale are better off leaving things abstract. It's partly a matter of immersion, but also an issue of "can I see around that corner?" It's silly sometimes that I can see enemies through walls just because the isometric view lets me.
Remember not to base your antipathy towards 3D on bad engines. If we judge everything by the worst example, every movie would be Gigli, every RPG Final Fantasy, and every TV show the damn Teletubbies. When done properly, 3D is good.
In any event, FO3 is looking good.John Brown did nothing wrong.

September 24, 2008 - Bethesda Softworks is not providing Fallout 3's community with mod tools at the game's launch. The company's higher priority is getting the highly-anticipated RPG ready for its October 28 release, asserted Bethesda Softworks' Vice President Pete Hines.
When asked about the modding situation by Rockpapershotgun.com, Hines replied, "Folk probably took for granted that every time we make a game, there's a mod tool. We explained to folk that it takes a lot of time and effort to get that tool ready for release, and it's not on our schedule right now. We need to get the game done and out. It's not to say we won't do it. It's that right now we have an enormous amount of work to do, for three platforms and all these different languages to get it out around the wall. Right now, we can't say definitively 'there will be mod tools, and here is when they'll be out'. That work remains to be done."
Bethesda's last RPG release, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, gave fans The Elder Scrolls Construction Set. This extensive tool allowed its modding community to add new weapons, items, and graphical tweaks.
Not very good. It's too early to get desperate, remembering how the modding tools for Elder Scrolls games always came out some time after the game, but this could mean that we're looking at a longer delay. I really hope they do come out at some point.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

Since this is all new to me, how is the Modding community?
I know Fallout3 statement above means awhile, but overall, do these games usually produce decent mods?
I remember SWAT had tons of Mods and most were very good
I also enjoyed modding SWAT, very easy to do
Gramps..now back to Guild Wars

With Bethesda in the past, the mods made the game a wholly different (and better) experience. As El Cid about Morrowind, he'll proceed to list all the dozens of mods he runs. Several of the mods for Oblivion not only improved the game, but fixed stupid crap that Bethesda should never have left in the PC game.Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

Ethical question:
I generally prefer to play consoles (no installation headaches, easier to share with friends, etc.). However, I'm also interested in mod tools. Is it fair use if I buy a copy for the 360 and then "acquire" one for the PC? Or am I a scumbag for not paying twice?John Brown did nothing wrong.
