Fallout 3

Actually I just moved to a new house and the roommate has an XBox360. So I'll probably pitch in for a household copy of Fallout 3.

Nobody in the house has a PC rig powerful enough to play the game, even though I have my suspicions that the game would work better with keyboard and mouse than the XBox360 controller.

I'm getting this game somehow. I don't have an 360 or PS3, but my laptop is just barely capable of running Civ IV (I usually have to play a smaller map with 7 or fewer civs in order to make it through a full game without crashing).

What should I do: Get a 360, a PS3, or upgrade my laptop's hardware?

I'm leaning 360 as there is no on-line support for Fallout on the PS3.

I wouldn't play Fallout 3 on a console even if someone pointed a gun at my head, that completely kills the gaming experience IMHO

As far as gaming goes, I'd prefer a console over a laptop. Desktop vs. console is different, but laptops are terrible.

Emperor, get a 360. The cheap ones are $200. It's such a good game that you'll enjoy it no matter what.

Why? The only drawbacks I can see are these:

Using a laptop keyboard (advise: buy a better keyboard to plug in)
Using a laptop mouse (same advise as above)
Expensive and less powerfull (But as long as the laptop can run the game, it should be fine, right?)

I'm starting to feel hyped up, though. My feeling is that Fallout 3 is the only upcoming game this year that might make me reconsider what the Game of the Year is.

Silly not to get a 360 at the moment in my view. There are a bunch of great games, it's a great price, the units are more reliable than on release, and there is stronger protection if you do get a duff box.

No brainer imo if you like games and aren't blinkered like some.

See, I've always been a console gamer. I'm much better with control pads than keyboards (always utterly destroyed in Half-Life tournies.) Computers, to me, are for Civ IV/StarCraft/AoE kind of games.

Felch: 360 for $200? So, $260 total? That's a sweet-ass deal. And I KNOW I'm gonna love this game. I've been dying for a Mad Max-ish Open World game since GTA III.

Well you basically named all the drawbacks. Why not save your money and relax on the couch in front of a big TV screen and blow dudes to hell with a little controller? Or you can crouch over a tiny laptop monitor and use peripherals that are bigger than the computer.

After a little while you'll get used to a game pad, and wonder why you were so stubborn to begin with. We're talking about something that is designed to play games. You have the buttons that you need, the analog sticks to control movement and camera, and nothing else.

A desktop works for some games. I prefer Civ on the desktop to the console, and ditto for RTS. But when it comes to open world games, the console is king.

Actually it looks like the game can be fine on XBox. So there's no reason to opt for the PC over the XBox. The game allows you to toggle between realtime and turn-based play, so the main drawback of the XBox is eliminated (that being that the controllers still aren't quite as accurate for realtime shooting and aiming as a keyboard and mouse).

I found Bioshock to be much harder to play well on the XBox controller than on PC, but if you can slow down the game to tactically think about targeting specific enemy body parts (like you could in Fallout and Fallout 2) then that is no longer a problem.

The other nice thing about consoles is that they are protected against technical obsolescence better than PCs are. You can get a good PC gaming rig today that plays all released games fine, but it'll be struggling to play the games that come out a year from now in the future. Console games have to perform well on the base platform no matter how late it is in the cycle.

I use the turn based almost exclusively. I only use the real time against enemies that are very near death, since it lets you get off a shot without waiting. It is very playable.

I have a question, I am impressed with the graphics and gameplay for XBOX 360

I would have one reservation, where my left wrist has had a total fusion (5-6" metal plate, 11 scrwes 8 of them from top to bottom and 3 to prevent sideway shifting and a bone fusion.

I can use fingers from second joint to tip pretty good, but cant "****-up" my wrist, even though the permanent fusion does this very thing, I have a hard time gripping with left hand, so wonder how it would be for holding the control and moving it (the character) around?

Those padals (L-R 1-2 on the top, are those an intricate part of movement?

Hey Gramps!

The XBox controller usually uses all the buttons, so you may be out of luck In most of the FPS games I've seen, the 2 buttons (the smaller of the shoulder buttons) usually select a weapon or a power, and the 1 buttons (the big buttons that really look like triggers) usually fire it.

In Bioshock, left shoulder selects your magic powers ("plasmids") and left trigger shoots them. Right shoulder selects your weapons and right trigger shoots them.

If you can, in your special case, I'd really suggest playing the game on PC, if only because left hand usually only has to tap the keyboard and there's no gripping needed.

Like now, playing Guild wars with Con and Uno for two, I kind of prop up pillows under left forearm and its at a natural angle where I have my fingers, on the w-s-a-d area.

It gets a littletough when my hand starts throbbing but as long as I keep it propped, not too bad

I do appreciate the feedback though...
