All the reviews say it is completely perfect. It's called hype.

IGN's review explicitly says it's not perfect.

A 10 doesn't mean a game is perfect -- it means a game is pushing boundaries, expanding a genre, and doing many things to a level so far above and beyond its competitors that they overshadows any flaws. Certainly, GTA IV has some issues, the most noticeable being the occasional flaw in the cover system, but there are many more pieces of GTA IV that are better than anything I've seen from a game in the past decade. We don't give 10s often -- just to games that merit the score.

The multiplayer looks outstanding though. That is a massive change over GTA3. Not to mention the cover system, which is actually a big gameplay change.

If you like driving games, GTA is good.

If you like action games, GTA is good.

If you like an open-ended world to explore, GTA is good.

If you like a decent story that doesn't bog down in Final Fantasy style nonsense, GTA is good.

If you like being a menace to society, GTA is good.

If you like all of those things in one game, GTA is definitely worth it.

Some people would prefer a deep Paradox game, or a more pure driving game like Gran Tourismo, and they will regard this as all hype. GTA isn't the best at any one thing, it's just good at a whole lot of different things. It's a game that five different people can enjoy for five different reasons.

GTA's story is retarded. It's a great action game but it looks to me like not enough cool stuff has been added, instead loser stuff like dates and cover system. I'm going to play it next week so whatever I'll find out for myself.

All of the PS3 v Xbox 360 warz amuse me slightly. For 99% of people they will to all intents and purposes look and play pretty much the same.

On Wiglaf's perennial hype point I do think this game is probably hyped too much in the early reviews. But it clearly is a must have game that is trying (and it appears succeeding) to push the boundaries.

And his point that Gamespot staff have routinely caved to advertiser pressure yet somehow were all fired for not caving is as incoherent as ever.

Actually, since you didn't like the implication that up until the management change Gamespot reviews were fair, you made a number of other arguments, in the thread below.

I don't read history books nor old threads. Those are for hobbyists and losers who have nothing better to do.

Let's face facts: an entire editorial board doesn't quit for no reason. A plausible reason is that advertising pressure forced their friends out, so they left. This is due to new management that made new rules that created a clear conflict of interest, and has been documented by former gamespot writers.

Now, as far as specifics, go argue with yourself. Maybe they were really fair before. Maybe they were only kinda fair. Maybe new management wasn't as forceful in fixing reviews as they could have been. I don't care.

Based on what we know now I think that is the most likely explanation. I also think that historically Gamespot reviews have been pretty fair and see those being fired/deciding to leave following the management change as evidence of that.

You want to have your cake and eat it too, but I am forcing you to make a choice. No one likes difficult choices.

Why?

The console calibration is slightly different (PS3 brightness is lower), but the PS3 version looks like a thin layer of vaseline was spread over a lens.
