Really, I'm loaded on freeware and abandonware already.

<Kassiopeia> you don't keep the virgins in your lair at a sodomising distance from your beasts or male prisoners. If you devirginised them yourself, though, that's another story. If they devirginised each other, then, I hope you had that webcam running.

DX2 isn't bad but the original is very much better. Graphics aren't up to modern standards but everything else about DX is pretty good.

If you are having trouble tracking older games down try www.gameplay.co.uk

I buy most of my stuff there and their older games are pretty cheap. I think I only paid £4.99 plus postage for DX when I bought it. They do mail to europe (even Ireland counts as europe) and postage rates aren't unreasonable.

DX (and DX2) both run perfectly on my Vista system.

EDIT: Gameplay don't list either DX game any more (I bought both from them about a year ago) but are still worth a look for other titles.

I also have a feeling you'd like the Serious Sam games.

There is some slight story overlap towards the end, but nothing I would characterize as major spoilers. Deus Ex: Invisible War is a pretty good game on its own merits, but it suffers from comparison with and sky high expectations from the original. Seen in that light, it could be an advantage to play the sequel first. It would be a shame if you disliked it and that put you off trying the original, though.

The Max Payne games are decent, but linear and (at least in the case of the sequel) quite short. I would recommend all the games on my list over them. Very pretty, though.

The GOTY edition of Deus Ex is available for download from Direct2Drive if you're interested. I got mine in a box from a store, but that's iffy. I don't think it's in production anymore. System Shock 2 I had to get a used copy from eBay, cost me nearly $30, but well worth it.

Yeah, you actually can try Invisible War before Deus Ex. IW is indeed a fairly good game. It's not great but it's a good one. It wasn't well-received by fans of the original because it's much weaker than Deus Ex, but if you play IW first, you won't have that bias.

But if you're only looking for one game, go for the original, sure thing. Playing Deus Ex for the first time is one of those unforgettable gaming experiences.

A short game is bearable if it's cheap. And I try to play older games first, so outdated UI's and graphics disaffect less.

I ordered Doom 3, Beyond Good & Evil and invisible War (as well as MIA - Arular) for £32.54 at Amazon.co.uk. Maybe I'll get Deus Ex from Ebay or just rip it. Quite looking forward to playing it any case.
Steam offers a Rockstar Collection pack with all the GTA games, Max Payne 1&2 and others for $70. That's something to consider for the future.

How does Direct2Drive work? Do I download the installation file(s) and be done with it?

"I'm loaded", wabetekenta? That you already have lots of them? I don't see how that matters, if you wish to try a new game.

I'll second the vote for X-Wing vs Tie Fighter.

It's a great game and if you've not got it already you should give it a try.
