When I glance over my notes and records of the Sherlock Holmes cases, I am faced by so many which present strange and interesting features that it is no easy matter to know which to choose and which to leave. Some, have baffled his analytical skill, and would be, as narratives, beginnings without an ending, while others have been but partially cleared up, and have their explanations founded rather upon conjecture and surmise than on that absolute logical proof. There is, however, one which was so remarkable in its details and so startling in its results that I am tempted to give some account of it in spite of the fact that there are points in connection with it which never have been, and probably never will be, entirely cleared up.
And so it was, we band of sleuths set out on another tour of London locations. Our first call was the British Museum.
‘At least five of you should know this place well.’ I said. I pointed at Frewer, Cook, O’ Toole, Cushing and Richardson. ‘Did you not all play Sherlock in The Hound of the Baskervilles at some stage in your careers’. And you too Basil, I added. I looked at the others. ‘And I am sure at least some of you have appeared in the Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle. Surely you Jeremy? I asked.
We moved on through Holborn to the City en route to St Paul’s cathedral. I pointed out Hatton Gardens, the UK’s Diamond centre. As we moved down to the Victoria Embankment, we could just make out Canary Wharf in the distance.
Wontner, Wilmer, Rowe and Stephens had seen it all before but it was new to Massey and Barrymore.
‘Enough of the sightseeing, where’s de dames’ said Barrymore. So we headed back to the Charing Cross Hotel.
‘OK guys’ I announced, ‘ It’s now 19.10, we’re scheduled to eat in Goldini’s restaurant, in Kensington, in an hour, so see you all down in the lobby in about 45 minutes’
First down was Wontner, followed soon after by Rowe, Brett, Cushing and Stephens. Massey and Cook were next, followed by another five in the lift.
‘Where in heavens is Basil, he’s usually quite punctual’ I asked.
Unfortunately Basil wouldn’t be joining us. His room was locked. We found him sitting in his chair: looking a bit bemused. His suitcase was open before him. There was a pistol wound to his head and it seemed he had opened the window for some air.
