  • Nethack: Minetown madness; 3 grave bones file

Could this be my chance to ascend? Playing my usual Elven Wizard and hit a bones file with 3, count 'em 3, graves. The ghosts of Gstar, Itchy, and Trippy have all been vanquished and there is a boatload of (mostly cursed) treasure for the taking. I have over 7500 Zorkmids and a co-aligned altar, but unfortunately the altar had been converted by a previous character and the angry Priest killed, so no Priest=no intrinsic protection.

Getting a wish from a water demon on DL1 certainly helped, and so I have +2 silver dragonscale mail. Bought Boots of Speed and I must have some decent amulets/rings/wands in this pile of stuff.

Next moves are to get some holy water, bless a magic marker, write a spellbook of Identify, and begin the long process of figuring out just what I have here.

After 6 or so years of on and off playing, this looks like one of my best chances yet. I have already passed the leave-it til-the-next-day-and-don't-die-after-10-moves test. I hope it doesn't end like that 100k point game where my Valkyrie choked to death on royal jelly.

Using a cursed ring of teleportation to pull off a heist and then getting teleported back to the store makes me sad.

      A bad situation indeed.

Well, I died with 84k points. Fortunately left a bones file and guess where? Right in the temple room in Minetown. I got scared by one of the ghosts that keep reappearing and died at the hands of a watch captain who was attacking me for drying up a fountain.

More good news is that most of the loot was stored in locked rooms, so there won't be a whole lot of cursed items upon my return. There will be much identifying though.

What were you trying to do with fountains in minetown? Gambling with one on Dlvl1 I can understand, but touching these things is always dangerous, so in minetown where there are guards when you've got a dragon scale mail AND speed boots?
A pity the priest was dead, though.

Dipping potions for holy water. Stupid I know, but I could have taken every watchman in the place if it wasn't for the ghost.

What this also means is that I cannot take advantage of the rare but always welcome occurrence of an altar and sink on early DLs for black pudding offering goodness, since Magicbane and Firebrand both exist in the bones file.

I did also run into a Priest later on in Minetown (must have respawned) but forgot about donating. It will be nice to scoop the 8k+ Zorkmids on a level 6 or so character and dump it into intrinsic protection.

I dare not imagine the fate of the character who'll get magicbane, firebrand, thousands of zorkmids... Did you dig the fountains so they're now puddles of water everywhere? If so and if it's coaligned with the altar, the character is sure to rock until you'll meet a silly death at the teeth of a gecko or something.

                A lot of this I don't understand, I'm a novice.

Last night, I started an archaeologist, that start with a wand of 3 wishes.(?)

Found on the interweb what to wish for so I had 6 total wishes. Found a potion with a Djinn in it for 7.

Somewhere along the way, I contacted lycanthropy and kept turning into a wererat.

Luckily, there was an altar on the 1st level, that was aligned to me, I prayed and apparently got rid of the lycanthropy.

                ACK!

I've found a lot of fountains but not sure if I want to use them anymore, since I think that is where I contracted the lycanthropy.

Nope, you got bit by a wererat when you were fighting one.

That's the only way to contract lycathropy, at least the only way I know.

                    There may be others.

Magic traps I think can do it as well.
