Thrown off course
On the sidewalk, one sunday morning
Lies a body, oozin life
Someones sneaking round the corner
Could that someone be mack the knife
We were still in shock from the events of the day before but we had to travel to our next venue. ‘Altavista, Altavista ’ I said ‘ for directions to Altavista, Virginia’. Eventually we arrived and pitched camp and erected the Big Tent the following day and a little later the sideshows were doing great business.
Grock continued doing the Wall of Death and Alfredo reckoned he could catch the trapeze when fired from the cannon so he volunteered for the cannon slot. Clyde wasn’t sure if he could manage the horses as well, so William offered.
All this doubling up led to a special meeting where some of the performers, especially Harry said ‘Should we reduce the price.’ ‘Chr*st no’ said Robert (of the Flying Nelsons). ‘Look, being a circus performer is no life of Riley’. So that was the matter settled for the moment. As they were leaving Ajax gave Xia a long lingering look.
‘OK’ I said ‘ let’s organize some routine, as soon as possible.’ This time Felix, Jules, Charles and Xia, fed the animals and Robert, Gypsy, Ajax and Clyde cleared up the usual mess. We still make a tidy profit from this.
In the evening I instructed the band to start up, as usual, at 17.50, which they did with ‘Circus Day in Dixie’ for the clowns, who started the show this time. Then came the acrobats, followed by William Kite with the horse riding display and Harry. Soon it was the interval.
‘Sorry ringmaster’ said Harry, ‘ but my 5th set of knives has been stolen’. ‘Look, don’t worry’ I said: infamous last words.
The second half went very well with Alfredo getting a special round of applause: what a daredevil. Clyde performed with both the lions and elephants. ‘Grrrrh’ went Clyde.
‘Grrrrrrrh’ went the audience. EEEEEEE went the elephants. Soon it was over and folks went to their other jobs. Gypsy went to her stall for her adoring audience.
Later with the punters gone home, I started to get the gang ready for the next journey.
‘By the way, where’s Harry’ I asked. We looked at each other and dreaded the worst.
We found Harry and his knives together, a knife pierced each hand and foot and one in the head. Next to his head was a little stain. Sh*t I thought, I decided to take custody of all Harry’s knifes. Another star performer was dead.
I had to take control again. ‘Look’ I said. ‘We’ve got to end this madness, so take your time voting but don’t forget we are on the road again tomorrow’.
We buried Harry on a bed of nails and the elephants stamped the covering ground. He was impaled, but we thought he would have liked that.Last edited by Hercules; April 22, 2007, 17:04.On the ISDG 2012 team at the heart of CiviLIZation

Did a google search on Altavista Virginia and all i found wasA new town on a new railroad
The new Town of Altavista was created in 1905 during the construction of the east-west Tidewater Railway between Giles County (on the border with West Virginia) and Sewell's Point in what was at the time Norfolk County. Planned by Campbell County native William Nelson Page and financier and industrialist Henry Huttleston Rogers, the Tidewater Railway was combined with the Deepwater Railway in West Virginia to form the new Virginian Railway in 1907. Although it was a common carrier and offered limited passenger service until 1956, the main purpose of the Virginian Railway was to haul bituminous coal from the mountains to coal piers on the ice-free harbor of Hampton Roads.
Lane Brothers Construction Company was the contractor for constructing 32 miles of the Tidewater Railway, including its crossing of the existing north-south Southern Railway in Campbell County. Three Lane brothers purchased 2,000 acres of land near the point where the railroads would intersect, and had civil engineers lay out a new town with streets and lots, complete with water, sewer, telephone service, and electric lines. Settlement was encouraged by the awarding of free lots. Named for the Lane family farm in Albemarle County, the new Town of Altavista was incorporated in 1912.
The former Virginian Railway became part of the Norfolk and Western Railway in 1959, and it and the Southern Railway were combined in the early 1980s to form the current Norfolk Southern Railway. Now operated by the same company, both railroad lines are still very active in the Altavista area.

UncleBilly google search:
WHO IS UNCLE BILLY?
Uncle Billy Lane was the late W. G. Lane, Sr. He was among the earliest residents of Altavista in the early 1900’s. Tradition has it that he established the practice of area farmers and merchants coming to town on the first Saturday of each month to barter and trade for livestock, crops and goods at an area known as the Altavista Trade Lot. Mr. Lane presided as the master auctioneer and also provided entertainment. The Trade Lot continues to operate on the first Saturday of each month as a giant flea market.
WHAT IS THE UNCLE BILLY’S DAY FESTIVAL?
Our festival is a two-day celebration under the auspices of the Uncle Billy’s Day Committee, Inc., a group of volunteer citizens who plan, raise funds and coordinate the activities of the weekend.
Uncle Billy’s Day started in 1949 as a one-day event to commemorate the founding of the Trade Lot. It is held each year on the weekend of the first Saturday in June. It has grown in the past several years to a two-day festival featuring a vast variety of activities. Among them are, of course, the flea market, a craft show, a car show, children’s games, pony rides, exhibits, fireworks and quality entertainment. As you can see, we have something for everyone. Due to the fact that our festival is family oriented, alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Also, please note that no animals are allowed in the park during the festival.
During the weekend, entertainment can be found on stages throughout the Riverfront Park. The entertainment is a variety of music, dance, magic, juggling, clowns, puppets that feature top quality children’s shows, and top local, regional and national stage acts, playing different types of music, all of which are offered at no charge to the people of our community.
Our Festival is held at the Staunton Riverfront Park in Altavista, Virginia - a great park for family gatherings!Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!
