Frankly, it is. Just look at how large a resolution that pic is at. Do you plan to sit that close to your TV?

I've seen both a PS2 and a Gamecube hooked up to an HDTV - by composite cables no less - and yes, it does reveal the flaws and pixels, just like if you hooked them up to a monitor. But ultimately, they're still perfectly playable. If you care to play the games for more than the eye candy, it doesn't matter too much. If anything, I'd say the HDTV is preferable, because you'll never have the problem of the TV being too small for you to see things well.

The picture was taken from 6 feet away. The resolution is due to how accurate the camera is -- if your eyes can't see problems with the Wii from 6 feet away, get glasses.

I didn't resize the image because resizing the image provides antialiasing, which is the problem with the image in the first place.

to you for trying to make excuses.

      • And yes, all the games are playable. But they're incredibly annoying. Every single Wii game I've played suffers from blurry textures and shimmering textures. This has nothing to do with most of them being "gamecube ports", and everything to do with the hardware's lack of texture filtering.

The aliasing is a given, seeing as it's 640x480 on a highres monitor on hardware without technology to get rid of the jaggies.

        • Is there nothing the TV can do to downscale?

          • Capcom announce more arcade downloads, including an HD version of SF2. Can't wait.

I'm sure all of the 'slightly more mature' gamers will agree.

Asher, I'm more than willing to agree the Wii has graphics problems on an HD tv, but you're just being absurd here. That picture clearly is taken from right on top of the TV, and even if the camera is 6 feet away, it is obvious zoomed in very close. The human eye would not pick up a lot of that pixilization unless they were sitting right on top of the TV. It would just look fuzzy from normal distance. to you making lame excuses to support your fanboyism

                • WTF?

It's a 7.1 MPixel camera from 6 feet away on a 42" HDTV. That is not zoomed, artifically enlarged, or anything. Deal with it. It looks ugly on HDTVs, it's a fact...

If you zoom in close you can see the individual pixels. Want to see the difference?

You are not seeing pixelation, you are seeing jaggies from the lack of resolution in the picture. And you can DEFINITELY see them from 6' away on an HDTV.

You're likely just confused because you don't understand that the image is cropped to show the relevant parts.

                  • This is what HDTVs look like when taken up close/zoomed in. See the pixel grid and pattern?

Contrast that with the simply aliased and blurry-textured original pic above.

                    • Maybe it would help if you posted the wii pic and then an XBox pic, from the same position and distance etc.

                      • No, I am fully aware the Wii does not look very good on an HDTV. I was merely taking issue with the way in which that image appeared to be taken. An SD image "bumped" up to HD will always look not-so-hot. Of course, Wii Sports isn't exactly a great example of superior graphics to begin with

Zelda's are just as annoying. The main problem with Zelda though is the constant shimmering...it's very distracting.

                          • Well, since Zelda is just a gamecube port, it shouldn't be taken as proof of the wii's capabilitie.

Both the GC and Wii lack texture filtering to eliminate shimmering...so yes, it can be taken as proof.
