I liked SC2000, but would have liked more realistic looking cities (not just graphics wise, but in terms of densities and zoning), more ability to zoom in, etc, etc.

What does SC4 mainly hog? The PC Id be running it on is 1.6 Ghz Celeron, 256 Meg Ram, an ATI Radeon 128 meg integrated video card.

i don't think your computer will run simcity4 well, honestly. it's probably for the best since the game is pretty terrible. just not very fun. felt like work. and I thought it looked really ugly.

edit: I cannot imagine liking the sims , either. girls tend to like it, because it is sort of like a dollhouse (i'm not stereotyping, just saying that girls like dollhouses, and older girls like reliving their dollhouse days on their computers and they also like soap operas )

sims . ugh. makes good gift for girlfriend or young girl but certainly not a man with any balls .

I personally prefer Simcity 3000. SC4 seems like a shell that requires heavy modification to make it at all enjoyable. SC3K works right out of the box. SC4 has a useless terrain editor and a non-existant random terrain generator. It's also primarily a transportation game. It's a shame, because I think it offers some great ideas (I love the regions, although I don't think they pulled it off as well as they could have) and the graphics are certainly an improvement.

                that's gonna hurt

Get SC3K or skip them altogether. Although SC4 might run on your computer, it'll be almost unplayably slow. It simply won't fit in 256 MB of RAM, even excluding everything else simultaneously taking up memory.

well if its just the resources, i might wait till we get another new PC, or upgrade the memory on the laptop. I take it the RAM is the limiting factor.

OTOH if SC4 isnt that great, I might just buy SC3K.

LotM : For the Sims, make sure you also pick up Makin' Magic, heck I'd spring for that all-in-one pack anyway even if she thinks she won't want them all now (famous last words around this house ). MM had the fixes that made the loading time alot quicker is why I mention it - Sims is a system hog as it is!

And don't tell your girl there are custom objects out there to download - your hard drive will thank you for that later

SimCity 3000, while the graphics aren't as good, has more variety - it has US, European, and Asian building sets. SimCity 4's building sets are grouped by different year (1900s, 1930s, 1906s, present) but they're all US... actually, half the stuff is lifted straight out of San Francisco.

Wed be running the Sims (the original) on a 1.6Ghz Celeron machine, with 256 meg Ram - id be surprised if it was that slow.

I think she really may not have that much time for the game, as shes starting an academically intense HS in the fall.

Simcity 4's regions concept was great in theory, but watch out for the commuters going from one region to another. The way the program treats the neighbor connections (just as job spots, with a commute time added) can make laying out a city a real pain. You can end up with commuters going in circles from city a - b - c - d and back to a. It can be a fun game, however, just make sure you research the flaws (simtropolis is the best place to do that). I played for months and months until I got tired of directing my commuters, and downloaded a few hundred megs of new stuff from simtropolis.

I am an old fart and while some games I am able to grasp (pong, ms pacman, pool) many others seem out of my capability to grasp the concept.

                            SIMCITY3000 is one of them.

It appears like an interesting game but for some reason, I seem to alienate my people and away they go in droves

I see hints but it appears to me I dont have enough resources to make all the things needed happen?

Oh well, maybe one day I shall figure it out
