But why narrow Civ into one category? Can't we expand it into something else?

The thing is, a Civ like (some calls this 4X) game involves having the player as some kind of god. If you take this away, it won't be Civ. It can be interesting in its own way, though.

I'd like to see a game like 'The Movies' except instead of being about makeing movies it would be about makeing games. You can be either Will Wright, Sid Meier, or John Romero. It is 3d and you have to run around an office building from cubicle to cubicle makeing sure your programmers stay well fed and fat - that your graphic artists are working in a place where no natural light will ever enter - and you have to crack the whip with the design team to make them post on internet forums asking 'What kind of game do you want' and hope that someone posts an idea worth useing.

I'm going to have to give a big to the X-Com idea myself, as I still play that game from time to time. As far as new ones go, I'd like someone to take the Oblivion system (or something similar) and set the game in Westeros. I am assuming you guys have read the books by George R R Martin. If you haven't, give them a try.

I'd love to see another true tactical shooter. Unfortunately, those are barely ever released. True tactical, as in your goal isn't just to shoot everyone, and that planning your actions is your important, and that how you move and do stuff is more important than how quick you're on the trigger.

As far as specific games go, I want to see SMAC2 someday. In fact, I wouldn't mind seeing more games with a solid and deep story behind them. You do currently get good stories in RPG games, but most stories in other genres are very simple or non-existent.

All I want is Elite 4. Just the gameplay of Elite3 with updated graphics and without the bugs. And (one can always dream) multiplayer...

Come on Braben, is that too much to ask?
Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards
And notifying the next of kin
            Once again...

              X-com

Heresy to some here, but it would probably work quite nicely on the DS...

                Its been done! kind of:

Though it lacks the base-building and economic concerns of its ancestor, Rebelstar delivers in a big way with a lengthy, engaging campaign married to an elegant turn-based combat system.

But they left out one of the fun parts - the base management.

Who said make it an FPS+RTS? - someone shot that man, or give him the Sims to play forever more

More RPGs on the Infinity Engine (Baldur's Gate).

Grand Theft Auto but with a player interface like the one used in Morrowind. It'sd be cool if you could still toogle stuff like auto aim so you could or could not keep those GTA features.

I'd just love being able to create a character in GTA, switch between 1st and third person in a GTA environment and being able to select from a battle axe, m16, claymore, autoshotgun, or crossbow when going on a kill-the-cops-a-thon. Bonus points if you get spells once you beat the game.

A strategy game of Civ-like depth dealing with organized crime. You play one of several crime families trying to expand territory, competing against the other families, upstart gangs, and the police & feds, while you exploit the citizenry.

Have a strong economic/black market model, and a strong diplomatic model (UN-like commission handles problems, but you can make secret deals behind their back.) Cover all sorts of illegal moneymaking opportunities - gambling, prostitution, narcotics, loansharking, extortion, skimming from legit industries (garment, restaurant, trash), kidnapping, robbery, fraud, counterfeiting, etc.

I also want real strategic choices. You may do a mission that gains you an ally that provides access to a great lawyer (reduced prison time for you & your men). You may then get the opportunity to play another mission, gaining you a different ally who offers sole access to a lucrative narcotic. BUT, this guy hates your lawyer source, so you can only be friends with one or the other. Which resource is more important, especially if whichever one you don't befriend may help out one of your rivals...

I may have to mod Civ4 to make this, but a genuine game would be cool.

Another possibility: gangster strategy/action game (with some rpg elements.) Three levels - soldier, capo & don. As a soldier it's a 1st or 3rd-person action game, as you do your bosses' dirty work. As a capo you have to do some footwork, but can also issue orders; half is action, half is strategy. As a don, it's all strategy.

So, you get to choose what role you play throughout the game, or you can move up in the ranks, starting as a soldier, becoming a capo after you reach a certain point, and then becoming the don.

well he says he's an Orphan, so maybe it was the lack of adult moral guidance that made him want to become a crime lord?

                              @ Urban Ranger,

Jagged Alliance would be a great one to update like X-com, heck i'm sure it would be good in FPS also
