  • I don't "acquire" games anymore (I did in the nineties), and I'm thinking to simply skip Civ5, may be abandon the series entirely. I already didn't get my money's worth from Civ4, not because it's that bad, but mainly because my interest has shifted.

I decided to never sell my soul to a game anymore. Even the MMO I'm playing now I play at most 15 hours per week (thats nothing for me).

    • Similarly, for me, I hope to never play more then 10 hours a week on a game again (and really hope to never spend more then 20). Now, I see nothing wrong with buying a video game that I play for 20 hours total...

      • I am dedicated to Rise of Nations and its add-on Thrones and Patriots.

I'm not normally much of a real time strategy gamer (the last I played was Command and Conquer: Red Alert way back in 1995). But Rise of Nations is very different and it's quickly become one of my favorite "pick up and pass an hour" games.

I can't play it for more than about an hour at a stretch, so I've always got SMAC/X to fall back on as a staple TBS, plus whatever FPS I'm currently working my way through at the time. But if you liked the type of variety that made Civ2 fun, and you're willing to try a bit of RTS, then RON and RONTAP are great choices.

It really didn't make much of an impact on this message board, which is a shame. It's a very sophisticated game and very worthwhile for all the time I put into it. I'm also pretty amazed at the customizability of it. People have tinkered with the scripting language to make some pretty profound mods for it, just as they did for Civ2 back in the day.

If anybody wants a game of RONTAP I'm definitely available. PM or email me.

        • I have never played Thrones and Patriots..(despite buying it long ago, I did like RON) so I might do that at some point.

          • Oh, C&C Red Alert, the game that forever hooked me on strategy games. Now that's one I regret buying
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

Don't get me wrong - Civ4 is one of the finest games ever made. This is precisely why it irritates me so much they are wasting all that potential by not finishing BtS.

In terms of buying now if I were you I'd get Civ4 vanilla to start with, unless you can get it cheap bundled with Warlords, which is different but also very good. You don't actually need the core game to play the expansion, but in some ways the Civ4 vanilla ruleset is tighter imo.

These games are fully patched, and Blake's AI mod for both games is very good. You could even get BtS if you're willing to play with fan fixes in place and accept more balance issues.

Either way, if your machine can run Civ4 I'm pretty baffled as to why you haven't played it yet.

This is really interesting, and since it's off topic I'd like to pick it up in another thread.

I haven't forgotten about our game AC, I had exams this week and will have them next week, but after that I am good to play.

I only just upgraded system RAM a few weeks ago, I dont think this rig had enough before that. I havent bought a game since, havent been in a game shop since. Current game status is A. Waiting on Paradox forum for an answer to a tech question on Crusader Kings which Im well into, but having a problem loading a saved game Im almost finished with B. Playing Age of Sail C. Started messing with the tutorial on RCT3 D. Devoting much time to non-gaming stuff.

Next time Im in a game shop I will look for Civ4 then.

                          I regret buying

                          Sim City 4
                          Sub command
Galactic civilizations (the game pales in comparison with AC)

                          • Lately, Sword of the Stars was disappointing. The 3D interface was too confusing.
We're sorry, the voices in my head are not available at this time. Please try back again soon.

Firstly I have to turn off my firewall to connect so I can finish installing. Then I have to guess at the serial code - is that a zero or an 'oh', I or L. If you're going to have serial codes at least use a sensible font. Turn off the firewall to authenticate. Work out from the error message if its the connection or code.

Finally start the game and get a Game Explorer error. Bit of reading and now I apparently have to create a shortcut and run in compatability mode (although there could be other reasons). Start game again and whole system hangs. More reading...Apparently I now need to edit the ini file through trial and error but probably the soundcard.

Edit ini file and not allowed to save it - the last one is probably Vista. I am an administrator, honest, but it tells me I'm not.

And of course I can't return the game because that's not the way it works here.

Sadly looking at various forums I;m not alone.
Mass Effect PC "features" SecureRom, hopefully the problems won't be as severe.

This sounds like a great plan:

According to Derek French, Mass Effect, scheduled to arrive on the PC this 28th, will employ the same SecuROM online activation system that was initially put into Bioshock, allowing the buyer to activate his copy of Mass Effect for 3 times before politely asking to him / her to go to hell, that is, contact the customer service “helpline” to get it reactivated. And while the game itself wouldn’t require the DVD to be physically present in the drive, it goes one step further and phones home every 10 days and re-authenticates just to make sure legit customers are not the worst form of criminal scum publishers swear we are.

The authentication, which will be initialized every time you run MassEffect.exe, will send the CD Key and a unique machine identifier to the activation servers, which will be cross-referenced with the data that was sent when the game was initially activated. Well, actually, it runs screaming to Mama every 5 days, but if it can’t connect, it will still allow you to save the galaxy and sleep around with Asari consorts for another 5 days, presumably reminding you to re-activate often with the dogged persistence of a James Bond doomsday death clock
