Either way, given the incredibly poor support, I think I'll acquire Civ5 rather than purchase through normal channels like I have with Civ4 and all the expansions.

Although it is potentially very good, I very much regret forking over cash for BtS.
Just think of it this way: you paid for BtS, but they didn't actually provide you with a working copy of the game, so you'll take a working copy of Civ5 instead.

Does BtS really not work? To the point of being actually valueless?

      • Considering the amount of time I spent testing that game and the fact that Firaxis didn't give me a copy at the very least I wouldn't feel guilty about aquiring CiV...
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

          BtS has fundamentally gamebreaking bugs.

True, but those who have the say, aren't known to browse forums.

              • Bioshock

Firstly I have to turn off my firewall to connect so I can finish installing. Then I have to guess at the serial code - is that a zero or an 'oh', I or L. If you're going to have serial codes at least use a sensible font. Turn off the firewall to authenticate. Work out from the error message if its the connection or code.

Finally start the game and get a Game Explorer error. Bit of reading and now I apparently have to create a shortcut and run in compatability mode (although there could be other reasons). Start game again and whole system hangs. More reading...Apparently I now need to edit the ini file through trial and error but probably the soundcard.

Edit ini file and not allowed to save it - the last one is probably Vista. I am an administrator, honest, but it tells me I'm not.

And of course I can't return the game because that's not the way it works here.

Sadly looking at various forums I;m not alone.

                  • Aw, man. That sucks

Bioshock's definitely one of the best games I've played all year. I played it both on the XBox (which had no installation problems but lacked mouse aim) and on the PC (where my whizkid brother installed it for me so I didn't have to fight my way through the bollocks).

I feel your pain. If it's any consolation, the game itself is truly magnificent... but that does rather depend on the player being able to install the damn thing first, eh? :/

Best of luck to you. If you can find an XP machine it works generally well on those.

That definitely sounds like a game I'd regret buying.

BtS with current official patches is badly broken. Fan patches make it pretty playable, but these are by necessity limited and a final official patch was promised months and months ago.

It now appears that was just a mistruth, as with C3C.

Even the most stubborn people learn after being lied to twice, I find.

                            • i do not play Civ anymore. I almost regret buying it myself.

They (Firaxis) completely destroyed it for me.

Well I never bought Civ3, thanks to my computer buying habits, so Id be jumping back into Civ for the first time since Civ2:TOT which I never had any problem with. Since my RAM upgrade my rig will run Civ4 apparently, so its now on my short list. How's the game without BtS?
