So is this now PCs you regret buying ?

For me that would probably be the Sharp MZ80A (to replace my MZ-80K) and the Jupiter Ace which didn;t last very long as what's the point when all your mates have Spectrums? What teenager is impressed by your knowing Forth?

To convert that to the uk it would be that the cool people had Spectrum's not Dragon's or Oric's. Still in hindsight i think those sound quite cool now

Regret:

Children of the Nile: i really liked this game, BUT it always crashes on me with enough frequency to make me very sad. It would have been better not playing it at all(as i like the bits i see), so yeh i regret buying it - ignorance was more blissfull

I had an Oric. The screen turned to porridge when the sound chip was blasting away, and the serial screen attributes were a laugh. The colour of a bytes worth of pixels was determined by a hidden code before it in the screen memory. If two sprites got too close, the one on the left would over-write the colour info of the one on the right.

It did allow a different colour on every screen line through, wheras the spectrum only allowed colour changes every eight lines. The Oric had a better version of Basic, too. It felt like a 'real' computer to use LEFT$, RIGHT$ and MID$ when writing parsers for adventure games instead of Sinclair's cheap, non-portable proprietory syntax.

I quite enjoyed the first few levels, but it then became a fiddly clickfest, and I put it down. If you like RTS it's probably OK, but as a dabbler I didn't take to it.

I don't think Empire Earth II is worth even trying then, if I have decided against the original.
