  • Well I have a spell called "Torch" (forgive me unprecise translations - I am translating back from a localized game), and it gives light for some 0.1 sec, because it is a spell to do damage. The second spell I have is called "Fireball". I am used to fireball spells as damage dealers, but this one heals me for some reason. Either the translation is crappy or the game is confusing.

    • There's one I think called Starlight, which gives light for like 37 yards for 57 seconds or something like that.

        • Managed to secure it via D2D last night. A little social engineering goes along way when convincing 'Customer Service' people to let you buy something when you are not supposed to be able to yet...

Playing on a laptop with a Mobility Radeon 9800. The card is supposed to support HDR, but the game doesn't seem to think so. Playing in 1280 x 800 with 2xAA and Bloom wasn't really viable, but any other resolution looked like ass. So, settled on 4xAA and no bloom. Once I found the mouse sensitivity setting and adjusted upwards a bit, I have the balance of looks and performance that works for me. I really want to see it in HDR, but that will have to wait until I am back in the states and upgrade my desktop machine.

Defintely enjoying the game so far. Sneak mode on with running always enabled gives a pretty fast movement clip and raises sneaking, so that has been my default movement mechanism. Trying to keep small critters flying through the air with my Flare spell is very amusing - wait until they jump at you, hit them with the Flare, which usually pops them into the air and then try to keep them up for a while!

Stealing is a bit overly strict. Though it was fun to steal from one ofhte guards during the first bit of the game. They would stick right on my rear until the next assassins came to visit.

Speaking of which, I dropped to 1 frame per 4 seconds during those attacks. Very dissapointing, especially as I have had NO other slowdown at all. The AI routine during that section must be really intense or something. Normal combat in the wild works fine, it was just that early section...

Loving the atmosphere. Found a few interesting books already, including some that could not be picked up, but could be read.

Defintely feeling the need to cut out of work early today and return to Tamriel!!

          • Apparently the German translation is a disaster. The first healing spell is called "Fireball" and the month "Last Seed" is translated as... "Last Semen".

The atmosphere in Oblivion seems brilliant, even better than Morrowind. I love the touch of letting NPCs sit down, it actually adds soooo much to the atmosphere... to see them sitting in a bar, not all standing around. Of course, the entire NPC AI system adds a fair deal of atmosphere.

My favorite moment so far. I was in one of the Imperial City sewers, and ran out of magicka with two Goblins on my tail. So I run out of the Sewers back into the city, and see the Goblins follow me - absolutely love letting monsters/NPCs cross areas. So then I run towards the nearest guard, who spots the Goblins and kills them, after which he proceeds to loots the corpses. Simple but nice!

            • The German voiceovers are good. The written texts are so-so, understandable but still infested with english parts and some tokens that look like script variables (along the lines of VAR_NPC_whatever) - as if they forgot a $ or % to it. The names of items and spells are indeed confusing on many places.

Now THAT is funny. I can just imagine a revised voiceover...

Oops, actually LOLed at that while typing and my coworkers are looking at my oddly now...

                    • As a warning to others, the GeForce FX 5500 runs the game badly. Even at the lowest resolution possible and everything turned off, there were delays between when I moved the mouse and when the cursor on the screen moved. With multiple AIs in the area, it is impossible to do anything.

My card is ranked as a "very low-end", so looks like it will need to be upgraded again. Does anyone have experience playing the game with a GeForce 6600GT 256MB AGP? That seems to be the best option for the price.

36? WTF do you need that many hotkeys for?!

And I don't mind going into the spell section to pick a spell before casting it. I can't remember all of mine anyway (it's what I did in Morrowind as well).

That's easily used and even exceeded. NWN has 3 bars (normal, SHIFT and CTRL) with 12 keys (F1..F12). The normal bar I use for weapon selection (F1..F4), heals+search+sneak (F5..F8) and pet/henchman control (stay ground, follow, attack, protect - F9..F12). The Shift-bar I use for buffs, potions, protective spells and armor selections. The Ctrl-bar for offensive spells and combat arts. That's enough for most classes, but if I play a spell intensive class (like sorceror), I can get low on space. But then, compared to NWN (and D&D 3 as a whole) Oblivion is shallow.

                          • Bethesda changed the requirements post-release saying that the FX 5200 or FX 5500 aren't even supported.

I had the exact same problem (Radeon 9800pro), and I've had no other slowdown except for those initial "assassin" battles. I think it was something with the graphical effect used when they were killed.

As for torches, I've had no problem finding them pretty much everywhere. And as for hotkeys, well, I'm playing a combat class, so I don't really have a problem with only 8. I could see it being kind of limiting if I were a magic-user.
