While waiting for deutrium to build up and a LC to return with some, to build a recycler, I browsed the statistics section and then had a look at the top alliances and the ones near ours in ranking.
We are currently 80th ranked by total points.
It is interesting and fun reading: like NZ8 are all Kiwis. Hellas are all Greeks. The blurb also says who they are in alliance with and who they have NAP with and who they are at war with if any.

He is the most powerful of us and rising pretty fast up, so I guess he has some truth, but seeing the stats I tend to disagree that like in most games defense is of low importance here.
I have sizable defenses now, but still more as a mild deterent then for genuine defense. Like Skanky I have a large output, something like 50k a day on my smallest planet, and I really don't want any jackass to come and raid.
But for real defense, I take the 'grab the money and run' approach. That means fleetsaving.
Then there is always the possibility you get hit by IPM's, which will detroy your defenses beyond repair.
So: yes defenses have their merit, but they should be on a low priority."post reported"Winston, on the barricades for freedom of speech

If the enemy is using IPMs, the price of his attacks goes up significanly as well, doesn't it?
Also, I doubt all planets should be equipped - some are hidden (enemy haven't yet detected em) or very far (enemy does not have a planet in the same Gal), some simply don't have the resources on them (shipped to some other planet or fleetsaved).
I am not advertising defense uber alles, I am just admitting that unlike most games, defense here matters and is among other tactics a viable one, not something everyone laughs at and calls you 'backsitter' or something.-- What history has taught us is that people do not learn from history.

building my first colony ship,i could out 3 in and fuel them still, but i think with their 1 hour pricetag ill wait and do them one at a time
also researching ion tech.the image for it looks like those undead buildings in warcraft3
i could have a cruiser sometime tomorow, but i think ill wait and build colonies up.the arguments for that above are persuasive...if you want to stop terrorism; stop participating in it

I have something like 16 cruisers and I use them sparingly. I think I spend deuterium more moving them around (fleetsaving) then I do attacking with them
I intend to build until I am ready to start building a fleet and at that point I will build a fleet large enough to attack at will. Until then an offensive fleet seems almost a hinderance (I think you are on the right track with colonies for now, offensive ships later).

Right now I'm building two colony ships. Tomorrow morning they are both going to the same system. Right next to a certain someoneAnd they are going to build only one kind of structure...
When the time comes you better kick me from the alliance because it won't be prettyWithin weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards
And notifying the next of kin
Once again...

I don't think we could kick the founder from that Alliance even if we wanted to!! (and why would we want to, you are going to get revenge for being attacked, if anything the alliance should be supporting you).
Good Luck and let me/us know if we can be of assistance in your attack or in the follow through.

But this is really a solo action and I think I can talk my way out of it. After I'm done (and if I'm still alive) I can always get back in the alliance.
