You are a god, there are people who worship you, and you can either be evil to them, making them worship you due to fear, or you can be good to them, making them worship you because they like you. Your power comes directly from their prayers at your temple. You get to build their villages and stuff, and although they can farm, chop wood, etc, you can do all the stuff much faster with your giant invisible hand. Or, if you don't want to help them, you can throw them around with your giant invisible hand instead. This is highly entertaining for at least a week.
The other important component of the game is the creature, which is basically a giant intelligent animal, whom you raise and teach to do your bidding. He will try to act like you do, so he'll terrorize the villagers if you're evil, and help them out if you're good. He can sometimes be a little frustrating to teach, but sometimes he's pretty funny.
The first game suffered from bugs, a too-short SP campaign, and a fairly annoying creature AI. That's why people are wary of the second.
