And if you ask why I don't play SoU/HotU, well, I am playing it too, I have a wizard there in HotU chapter 3.
You might enjoy some of the player made mudules. Yes they do have bugs, but what software doesn't.

    • Most of the player created modules I've played seem to be bug free or nearly so.

      • There are some decent ones, but I find them hit and miss. If I haven't played them in a while and have nothing to do, I'm usually more than happy to play SoU and HotU.

        • I was a bit PO'd after I wasted a couple of days into The Nether Scrolls (the fan created missing link between OC and SoU), only to have an unplayable, crashing mess. The story is nice and I had great fun to play. Credits to the creators. I was sad that it had to end like this.

It may be the fact, that I am playing a localized game version. At least that's often the reason for problems in other games. Not sure about that, though, as I had very little problems with Folderol.

          • Guide to player made modules from http://nwvault.ign.com/

1st caveat, don't bother with any in the category "Bioware Contest". These are designed to win a contest, not provide an exciting adventure and aren't really worth downloading.

2nd caveat, older modules can have Bioware patch induced bugs. Over the years with patches and x-pacs, Bioware has changed, removed and recoded quite a few script commands making some older modules unplayable due to script errors. Anything requiring both x-pacs will mostly work as written although recent patch changes will affect some of them too.

Incidently The Nether Scrolls isn't a good example of a player made module as it's actually a "Bioware Contest" module (see 1st caveat).

Click the "Modules" link, then on the next page select "Top Rated". Almost all in that list to at least page 8 are excellent.

The Overlooked modules list is also a good starting point.

            • Why are they so bad? Presumably the contest is to make the best module, not make the worst module?

                • Yes, thanks for clearing that up.

Obviously it's very clear that a module designed to win a contest would be awful. Clearly the contest would be to design the least interesting dungeon possible.

                  • Let me just say that I don't believe contest modules are bad per se, in fact most of them are really well put together.

Just that 30 minutes of bling doesn't compare to a module constructed provide an adventure.

                    • Yeah, I'm still not getting it. What is 30 minutes of bling? Is the point that these modules are high quality but too short?

I'm sure you have a point - you just need to make it more clearly and not roll your eyes when asked for clarification.

                      • Ok, how about an analogy using automobile design.

                        Contest module = concept car
                        Normal module = production car

                        • Right, so they are designed to do one impressive thing very well, and not that long, and therefore not fulfilling? See, that wasn't too difficult.

From what I have seen it's pretty large and for sure not fit for the attribute "30 minutes of bling".

That said, thanks for the hint and the link Qilue, I didn't know that little difference. I'm at the moment occupied with Patricians Online and a couple other games, but when I get the time I'll try a couple non-contest modules.
