  • Iron Gate's Second Five Year Plan

With the education rate rising at a steady clip, it was now time to begin moving into manufacturing and high tech.

The export zone was expanded to five time its original size, and a new factory and high tech park were added on the other side of town.

Meanwhile, the legacy of the first five year plan was starting to catch up to the city, as fumes from the dirty factories crept through the mountain pass at Propaganda Hill.

Immediate action was taken to begin replacement of these foul industries with manufacturing. This process had the side benefit of pushing back the day when the No.3 power plant would need to be built.

Population continued to grow to 73,000, with many residents moving up to the middle class.

City growth was flat for most of the last five years, though the last year has seen a modest increase. Commercial jobs, however, more than doubled, and industry has become exclusively high-tech. The only exception to this is in the quarantine pit, where the city officials who went to oversee the area's standard of living upgrades have never been seen again. While they had been assigned a police escort, the officers in question were apparently busy street racing half a city away--although, observers noted that the cops had kind of missed the point:

                      Economic Takeoff in Iron Gate!

After ten years of rapid construction, the housing shortage was declared to be officially solved. Now that everyone had a place to live, it was time to provide some jobs.

Consultants from MingDanS Inc., a multinational finance and media conglomerate, were invited in to plan the Third Five Year Plan.

Rather than invest in land-intensive industry, the economists recommended building tall buildings filled with little cubicles where people could spend their days spamming about politics on the Internets with other people in other countries. Calling these things offices, they promised that these would catapult Iron Gate into a bright shiny future.

Naturally, real estate firms were the first to the party, with dozens of copycat chains sprining up along the main east-west road.

Before long, these Poly-posting forum-gaming office workers were demanding other facilities: an airport to travel to Polymeets, a convention hall for Polycons, a courthouse for the moderators to administer the Banning Rod in a just manner, and a stock exchange for selling shares in PLUS.

By the time over $175,000 in government money was used to erect the 80-story MingDanS Tower, the Capitalists seemed to be winning the debate hands down, with the old socialists confined to Tassadar Town in the northeast, where the only new development was a new garbage incinerator.

                          • Thousand Isles '15 now available at Lemmy's Upload Thing.

The farmers of Thousand Isles realised there was no way they could afford the taxes (that they were glad to pay!) on their farmland alone, so they leased most of their land to corporations and thus the bizzare farm-mall commercial conglomerate thing was born. To the north-east the Town of Knowledge was constructed around the new University, also home to a the Main Library.

In the middle of the ocean a new industrial island with no road connections was formed, it can be accessed by subways from 2 nearby islands and freight is shipped out by sea port.

The water also mysteriously got darker. Is this an omnious sign of things to come? (or did I just install the realistic water plugin )

In the main part of the city, which still hasn't been given a name, the bay was dredged deeper and land reclaimed, providing room for a marina, beach and a Deluxe Police Station.

The Peninsula at the north-east of Thousand Isles is zoned for low density high tech rewards. It was a great relief to upgrade to solar power and no longer have to place new windmills all the darn time. (And every single windmill was made to face the same way asdf)

(The bay will be a new commercial center)

The extent of medium and high density development is limited currently to a small strip of land by the water:

Most other res/com development is low-density, where the more monied folk generally live:
