  • Championship Manager 5

I bought CM 5 a couple of days ago, and now I am totally lost.

The game seems to have a nice bit of depth and a lot of data. OTOH, it doesn't have the right tools for you to handle this data, and information on vital statistics is lacking.

I RTFM and it helped a bit, but it is slim and small and a lot of information is missing. There is no PDF or other kinds of help files on the CD, and the stupid tutorial doesn't tell me things I don't already know. The manual tells me there is a stat called "finishing" which supposedly is important for forwards - but there is no such stat in the game.

First, they don't tell you what all these players and staff stats do, and how they affect the game. There are a lot of different numbers and traits (fitness, morale, personalities, etc.) but I know nothing about them. The only thing I can tell is, the higher, the better.

Second, there aren't sufficient tools. I can compare players, but I can only compare two at a time - and no way of removing somebody from the list once he is added - which doesn't help when there are hundreds of potential players to choose from. It would be nice if I can pick at least 10 players and have them listed side-by-side.

So I have spent like 5 hours already and have absolutely no idea what to do. Anybody has tips and tricks on how to play the game?

GameShadow doesn't work. Complains about unable to decompress corrupted data and fails to connect to the server.

I've never played CM5, so can't help you much I'm afraid.

I don't know if you know, but the devs who built up the CM series split from their publisher and branched out on their own. They didn't have anything to do with CM5, and from the reports I've heard it really shows.

The devs' new game is now called Football Manager and it's very good. I can imagine it will still be a bit overwhelming if you're new to the genre (are you?), but it's by far the best game of it's kind.

If you want to compare the two games, the demo (165MB) of Football Manager can be downloaded from this link: http://www.thedugout.net/download.ph...&cat=1&page=1#
If I'm posting here then Counterglow must be down.

Perhaps this is the end of CM as a real gaming force? Of course sales for this one should still be high due to inertia.

Well, it was fun while it lasted. Rest in peace CM.

Yes, the problem with CM now is that its not made by SI, and thus a pile of toss.

                    Oh no, UR! You didn't!!

SI has nothing to do with Championship Manager anymore and their game is now called Football Manager.

Sorry UR - you should have mentioned you were thinking of getting CM5, and we could have pointed you in the right direction(FM2005 by Sega).

                      CM5:
Metacritic aggregates music, game, tv, and movie reviews from the leading critics. Only Metacritic.com uses METASCORES, which let you know at a glance how each item was reviewed.

                      FM2005:
Metacritic aggregates music, game, tv, and movie reviews from the leading critics. Only Metacritic.com uses METASCORES, which let you know at a glance how each item was reviewed.

Take CM5 back to where you bought it and exchange it if you can for FM2005(although 2006 is coming soon, so you could get your money back and wait abit?).

Not the first time I bought lemons on impulse

coT - thanks for the meta review site. Some of the games I am contemplating turn out to be bad.

just looking at those metacritic reviews of both games i gave UR - its odd how the highest reviews for both games are from the same source; the Times newspaper.
maybe broadsheets should just stick to what they do best huh?
