Hmm... well, you do basically create an ecosystem- so that's a lot like simlife- but sim earth sort of did the same thing on a much larger scale, so I guess I sort of have to admit defeat there, lord of the mark- it'll probably be more Sim Earth than Sim Life EXCEPT for the crafting of the life- that seems as though it will be done in a more Sim Life sort of way.
In Sim Earth the lifeforms were set- in Sim Life, they were designed.
Ok. sorry i confused people. I didnt mean that Spore would be closer to simearth than Simlife. I was merely pointing out for spikeys benefit that Wright games HAVE included war, where it made sense, despite "The Sims" not having war.

Which was very artful of you (or you missed the point), as we were talking about whether the not the game would directly feature interplanetary conflict, not have some vague allusions to war.

I thought the level of abstraction wrt war in simearth was appropriate to the scale and focus of that game.
Scale will obviously be treated differently in Spore. Im not sure about the focus. I dont cant say that there will be more detailed war in Spore than in Simearth - I can say it is my expectation that war will be treated in a way that fits the game well. And it is my suspicion that it WILL be more detailed than in Simearth.

Does anybody know what is going on with Spore? I don't recall seeing it in the stores, so is it still under development, or has it been shelved?

And rumor has it they are planning a release on handhelds (EA posted a job ad looking to fill positions on Spore handheld development). As for the PC version, it's not due out until late this year.

That's a very long development cycle...
It's not really. Just that they announced the game at very early stages of development, which they normally don't do. (Mostly because Will Wright couldn't keep his mouth shut and started talking about the game at conferences before an official announcement.)

Yeah, this is the video from last year's GDC. I think there was another thread here about Spore around that time, and it may have been posted there. Thanks for the link though, Colon.
The game will be interesting if only for the fact you begin as microscopic life and scale all the way up to an intergalactic society.
However, I don't think the game will quite be to my taste. It won't be Civ in space, nor anything like Alpha Centauri.
I get the impression it will be a game for people who love to create content - one vast sandpit for people to play around with. I have no interest at all in editing/designing aliens and their buildings and vehichles. Like the Sims 2, I'll probably play it for a few weeks and not touch it again.
